The awards were presented at the OCNA awards night on Saturday in Toronto. Award-winning Oakville Beaver artistic director Steve Nease picked up a Premier Award for Cartoon of the Year. The editorial cartoon showed a man passed out beside his air condi tioner and neighbours asking over the fence, "Heat stroke,?" as the man' s wife replies, "Hydro bill." "A memorable cartoon on an issue that dominated the Ontario news last summer and will continue to do so in the years to come," wrote judge Brian Gable, cartoonist for The Globe and Mail The Oakville Beaver also took the Milt Dunnell Award for Best Sports Section, which was judged as one that "featured excellent photography, solid writing and a well laid-out and puttogether package." And a newspaper is not just news and photos. The Beaver won top spot for In House Promotion, which judge Bernadette Jordan of Nova Scotia pro nounced, "This is newspaper promo tion!! In all of my years of judging I' ve never given close to a perfect score before." Called Partners in Success, the 48page special section celebrated The Oakville Beaver' s 43 years in the com munity and its relationships with the people, agencies and organizations in town that form successful business and charitable partnerships. The advertising department also earned second spot in Original Ad Idea fora special Beaver Trails section -- something the judge declared "a gimme" for an original ad idea. The ad department also finished third in the Local Retail Layout cate gory for a Mexicali Rosa' s advertise ment. Long time Oakville Beaver com munity editor Wilma Blokhuis was also among the top three finishers in two award categories. Blokhuis took second in the Premier Award for Environment Ontario writing for Happy Trails, a fea ture series that saw the veteran news paper woman hiking the heritage trails across Oakville. "Happy Trails was easily the most pleasing to the eye of all the entries with its fantastic, colourful photogra phy and clean layout," wrote the judge who dubbed it "very solid feature work." · "There is also something to be said for reporter initiative when you con sider the substantial amount of time -- if notj>hysical effort-- required on this interesting project," stated the judge. Blokhuis also took second -- though the judge reported it was not first pick "only by the slimmest of margins" -- for Best Sport and Recreation Story, again for Happy Trails. "The writer demonstrated herself to be a wordsmith in painting a pic ture of the walking trails of Oakville," stated the judge. Former Oakville Beaver reporter Craig MacBride, who n6w works at The Mississauga News, took third place for Best Investigative News Story for his series on the coroner' s report into the high-profile death of an autis tic patient at Oaklands Regional Centre. Kudos at the OCNA awards were shared by staff at The Beaver' s sister newspapers, also headed by Oliver in the Halton division, whose work often appears in The Oakville Beaver. Reporter Jason Misner, who works at The Beaver' s sister paper, The Burlington Post, won second place for investigative reporting. Halton Division sports reporter Herb Garbutt took second place for Best Spyrts Photo for a photo pub lished in the Georgetown/Action Independent and Free Press. Milton Canadian Champion pho tographer Graham Paine earned first place as Photographer of the Year while Burlington Post photographer Ron Kuzyk was third in the same cat egory. Pictures from both photogra phers regularly appear in The Beaver.
