www.insideHALTON.com | OAKVILLE BEAVER | Friday, September 23, 2016 | 14 Food for Life speaks to need on Hunger Awareness Week by Julia Le Oakville Beaver Staff As part of a national Hunger Awareness Week, this week Sept. 1623, Food for Life says hunger impacts Oakville, just as it does across Canada. Hunger Awareness Week is a national movement that aims to draw attention to the hunger that exists in Canada -- and the role of food banks. Food for Life is speaking up to shine a light on what food banks call a "solvable problem." One in six households accessing food banks are those in which people are working, but still can't make ends meet, according to the Hunger Awareness Week website. For 200,000 Canadians, every week is hunger week. Locally, approximately 9,000 clients access Food for Life programs monthly at 27 food bank and hunger relief agency sites in Oakville, Food for Life Executive Director Brenda Hajdu stated in a media release. About 9.1 families in Oakville are considered low income -- which is higher than the regional average of 7.9 per cent, she noted. To tackle hunger, Food for Life has teamed up with numerous community partners, funders and agencies, such as Halton Region, the Sprott Foundation and others. United Way Oakville (UWO), Hajdu said, plays an integral role in Food for Life's ability to do its work -- distributing food to those in need in Oakville. "We are extremely grateful for the generous support. It is because of sociallyresponsible organizations like United Way Oakville and the individuals, who donate to it, that we are able to Brenda Hajdu provide fresh, nutritious food for 175,000 meals a month to people in need in Halton region through food banks and hunger relief agencies," she noted. "Food brings people together and provides our neighbours opportunities to learn of other supports in their community," said UWO CEO Brad Park. With UWO's annual fundraising campaign just launched, Food for Life notes UWO in turn helps fund 31 local social service agencies. All funds received by Food for Life from UWO go to sourcing and distributing fresh, nutritious foods to people in need. Food for Life is also supported by the Oakville Community Foundation (OCF). This year in particular, the OCF has funded a joint program, of Food for Life, Community Development Halton and Feeding Halton, to address barriers faced by the working poor. "Complex issues need engagement with many partners -- decisionmakers and leaders in the community to effect positive change," said OCF CEO Wendy Rinella in a media release. "Food for Life is a wonderful agency, working closely with a strong network of engaged community partners, funders and agencies to build resilience in the community around key issues such as hunger and the working poor." Food for Life delivers food to ArtHouse, Front Line Outreach, Kerr Street Mission (KSM), Lions Foundation, Oak Park Neighbourhood Centre and the Halton Multicultural Council, which are among 80 food banks, agencies and food programs Food for Life supports across Halton.
