The peewee, bantam and midget Jr. Rock teams all won their divisions to capture the NLL Champions Cup at Oakville's Toronto Rock Athletic Centre. The three Rock teams combined to win 19 games in as many starts during the three-day event. The midget team, coach by Rock owner and president Jamie Dawick, defeated Jr. Edmonton 12-5 in the division championship game. The Jr. Rock jumped out to a 7-0 lead at the half, a gap the Edmonton squad couldn't overcome in the second half. Josh Dawick's three goals and two assists led the Jr. Rock. Sharpshooter Dyson Williams won the trophy named after his older brother, the Tucker Williams MVP Award. Rock strength coach Sean Holmes assisted Jamie Dawick on the midget bench throughout the tournament. In the bantam final, the Jr. Rock fell behind 2-0 less than a minute into the game, but led 6-4 by halftime on the way to an 11-7 Champions Cup victory over Edmonton. Jr. Rock's Tommy Collins scored two key secondhalf goals, winning the bantam Tucker Williams MVP award. NLL Rock players Nick Rose, Damon Edwards and Brett Hickey coached the team to victory. The peewee Jr. Rock started strong, taking a 5-1 lead over the Jr. Mammoth seven minutes in on the way to a 12-6 win. Cameron Sanderson scored three times in the opening half and later added a fourth goal to lead the Jr. Rock. Ty Jesso won the peewee Tucker Williams MVP award. He scored two goals in the final, part of a 10goal output in the tournament. Rock assistant GM Josh Sanderson and defender Bradley Kri coached the peewee team to victory. The Blades will open the schedule on Friday, Sept. 9 when they host the Georgetown Raiders at 7:30 p.m. In Wednesday's game, the Blades came back from a 2-0 second-period deficit to tie the score on goals by Chris Brill-Morgan and Jackson Bales, but the Cougars' Owen Burnell connected for the winner with 2:57 remaining in the game. | photo by Riziero Vertolli ­ Oakville Beaver Oakville U14 A girls qualify for Ontario Cup final Oakville's under-14 A girls' rep soccer team will attempt to win an Ontario Cup championship on Sunday, Sept. 11. The girls advanced after a semifinal win last weekend over North Mississauga, a game that needed eight rounds of penalty kicks to break a 1-1 regulation and overtime draw. Anastasia Kim scored Oakville's goal in regulation time and shooters in the penalty-kick shootout were eight for eight. Goalie Jessica Urban stopped North Mississauga's eighth shot to give Oakville the win. Oakville's opponent in the Cup final will be Waterloo United, a game scheduled for the Soccer Centre in Vaughan at 10 a.m. To get to the Cup semifinals, Oakville won its Group 6 round-robin against Thunder Bay Chill and Oak Ridges Knights to advance to the quarter-finals, where it blanked Sault Civics 2-0. In league play, Oakville has five wins and five ties in 12 outings. Absent: Alicia Morielli and Lauren Chan. | photo submitted Oakville A's Tier 2 minor bantams qualify for provincials The Oakville A's minor bantam Tier 2 team secured one of two spots available to represent the Central Ontario Baseball Association at this weekend's provincial championships in Thornhill. The A's were one of six teams attempting to qualify for provincials at the minor bantam A level. Oakville defeated regular-season champion Burlington Tier 2, 5-3, and second-place finisher Brampton Tier 2, 8-1. The double knockout event had the A's playing Milton twice, losing the first game 10-4 but winning the second game 17-10. Milton secured the second playoff spot by defeating Mississauga. The provincials will feature 12 teams from across Ontario competing for the minor bantam A championship.
