www.insideHALTON.com | OAKVILLE BEAVER | Friday, September 2, 2016 | 8 Celebrating Eid in Oakville Sept. 5 and Sept. 11 While Muslims across the world get ready to celebrate Eid al-Adha, also known as the Festival of Sacrifice, two Oakville women are hoping local residents will join them as they mark the special occasion. Muneezah Jawad and Zaitoon Umer have been organizing an Eid Bazaar, which will take place at Otello Banquet Hall, 2273 Royal Windsor Dr., on Monday (Sept. 5) from noon to 7 p.m. The event will feature traditional foods, ethnic clothing, jewelry, henna and a bhangra dhol (drum) performance. Jawad, who has lived in Oakville for 14 years, said as Oakville grows, so does the Muslim population that exists in the town. She's hoping the event, will become an annual celebration that encourages small businesses and members of all faiths and communities to enjoy the festivities together and "further build a sense of community." "Eid is for Muslims what Christmas and Hanukkah is to other faiths," she described. "It's when families celebrate, get together, dress up and gorge on awesome food." Eid al-Adha is also marked by special prayers, visiting family and friends, exchanging greetings and gifts, and making donations to the poor and needy. It's a time for forgiveness and compassion. Jawad said the event is a great way for the community to come together in celebration and make some new friends. For more information about the event, visit www.facebook.com/ events/528933770637294. Meanwhile, residents are also invited to celebrate Eid al-Adha at Coronation Park, 1426 Lakeshore Rd. W., on Sept. 11. The event, hosted by the DAR Foundation, is expected to bring out around 1,000 people. It begins at 10:30 a.m. with prayers. A bhangra dhol (drum) performance will be held at the Eid Bazaar taking place at Otello Banquet Hall, 2273 Royal Windsor Dr., on Monday, Sept. 5 from noon to 7 p.m. | submitted photo We fill more than your prescriptions.
