Climate change is real and has to be addressed: Oliver continued from p.10 Topics at the forum included renewable energy, carbon pricing, environmental adaptation and innovation, infrastructure and building practices, habitat and greenspace preservation, international cooperation and commitments, environmental assessments and consultations with Indigenous people, town planning, food and agriculture and mitigation of emissions. Braeden Soltys, a 21-year-old Sheridan College student, was at the carbon pricing and international co-operation and commitments tables. `Not a fan' of cap-and-trade Regarding the topic, he said the group is not a fan of cap-and-trade and it prefers "direct, at the source pricing taxation" of carbon, whether it's coming from oil drillings or mining. "There was also ideas thrown around for a revenue-neutral form of carbon taxation... so it goes directly to the citizens, similar to how the child care benefit tax comes directly to us," said Soltys. "That could increase at a linear progression so that over time, carbon becomes less and less affordable, incentivizing greener energy. The tax breaks get better for all of us." Soltys would also like the government to redirect fossil fuel subsidies into green energy projects. During his opening remarks, Oliver stated the scientific evidence is clear and climate change is real, so "we have to address it." He noted global temperatures have increased by nearly 1 C since 1880, while Canada's temperatures have risen by 1.6 C since then. "Canada's emissions are projected to increase if significant action is not taken. I've heard repeatedly, every month in 2016 has been warmer than any other corresponding month since we started recording temperatures," said Oliver. "In Canada, our current greenhouse-gas target is to be 30 per cent below the 2005 levels by 2030." All suggestions to be forwarded to Ministry All suggestions presented at the forum were recorded and will be forwarded to the office of the Minister of the Environment and Climate Change for consideration in Canada's future policies. Oliver noted a First Ministers' meeting with Prime Minister Justin Trudeau this fall, a follow-up to the March gathering, will continue the discussion on Canada's climate change agenda. "That will be a very important meeting for Canada, as we set our national and provincial agendas on how we're going to move forward and address these very important issues," said Oliver. Those who couldn't attend the forum can submit their ideas and concerns to John Oliver online at https://johnoliver.mp/haveyour-say/climate-change-consultation. 13 | Thursday, September 1, 2016 | OAKVILLE BEAVER | www.insideHALTON.com Experience premium winemaking at the best prices.
