They're hosting a fundraiser at Arabic restaurant Sidra, 667 Fourth Line, this Saturday (Aug. 27) to support Help Refugees, a charitable fund based in the U.K. that provides the basic needs of food, shelter, clothes and medical care in areas where large non-governmental organizations (NGOs) are unable to operate. Help Refugees latest census revealed there are 9,106 people living in the Calais refugee camp in France, 865 of whom are children living in the jungle. About 78 per cent of the children are alone, Help Refugee states. Abboud, a St. Ignatius of Loyola Secondary School graduate who is going into his fourth year at Western University in London, Ont., told the Oakville Beaver he'd like to do what he can to support orphaned children find foster parents, receive mental health support and other basic needs. He's also hoping the fundraising event will encourage the community to band together and show their support for Syrian refugees who are settling in Halton.
