Kayaker Adam van Koeverden will be competing in his fourth Olympics. It's been 12 years since van Koeverden, 34, won gold and bronze in Athens. He has brought home a medal from each Olympic Games since then, earning silver medals in Beijing and London. Van Koeverden is one of only six Canadian athletes to win four medals at the Summer Olympics and one shy of matching Phil Edwards (track, 1928-1936) and Lesley Thompson (rowing, 1984-2012), who each won five, for the most all-time. Van Koeverden will compete in the K1 (kayak singles), with preliminaries beginning Monday (Aug. 15) and the final Tuesday (Aug. 16). Competing in his third Olympics will be van Koeverden's Burloak Canoe Club teammate Mark Oldershaw. Oakville Olympians on the world stage in Rio The third-generation Olympian -- grandfather Bert (1948, 1952, 1956), father Scott (1984), uncles Dean (1972, 1976) and Reed (1976) -- became the first family member to earn a medal when he captured the bronze in London. The 33-year-old Burlington native won a silver medal at last summer's Pan American Games, where he was the flagbearer for Canada at the opening ceremonies. Oldershaw will compete Aug. 15, with the final on Aug. 16. Oakville's third returning medallist is Diana Matheson. It was Matheson's injury-time goal that gave Canada's women's soccer team a 1-0 victory over France in the bronze-medal game at the London Olympics. That victory came on the heels of a thrilling, and controversial, semifinal in which the U.S. scored in extra time to edge Canada 4-3. Matheson missed all but one game at the 2015 Women's World Cup, hosted by Canada, after tearing her ACL in her left knee just eight months earlier. She also had to contend with a broken foot suffered during her rehab. The 32-year-old midfielder ranks second to only captain Christine Sinclair in all-time caps (185) for the national team and is also among the team's all-time leaders in assists (third, 20) and goals (seventh, 17). Mack Darragh and Dominique Bouchard of the Oakville Aquatic Club make their Olympic debuts. Darragh, a 22-year-old Iroquois Ridge grad, won both the 100m and 200m butterfly at the Canadian Olympic trials, helping him earn a spot on Canada's 4x100m individual medley. Bouchard, 25, a native of North Bay, will swim both the women's 100m and 200m backstroke for Canada. Lee Parkhill won a bronze medal in the laser sailing competition at the Pan Am Games in Toronto. Parkhill, who got his start at the Oakville Yacht Squadron, has twice finished 16th at the world championships and reached as high as 11th in the world rankings. The 30-year-old Pierrefond, Que. native moved to Oakville when she was 16, just a couple of years after taking up the sport and trained at the Burloak Canoe Club. Now with the Balmy Beach Canoe Club, Fraser won a gold medal at the Pan Am Games for a second time last year as a member of Canada's K4 crew. The K2 race will begin with preliminaries on Aug. 15 with finals on Aug. 16. A member of Canada's women's wheelchair basketball world champion team in 2014, Melanie Hawtin, 28, will compete in her first Paralympics. The Paralympic women's wheelchair basketball tournament runs from Sept. 8-16. Sasha Boulton thought a back injury had ended her career as a competitive triathlete but is now a guide for Christine Robbins, who is legally blind. The women's triathlon will be held Sept. 11.
