The annual free event, hosted by the Downtown Oakville Business Improvement Area, takes place Friday, Aug. 5 from 5:30 p.m.-midnight and Saturday, Aug. 6 from 1 p.m.-midnight. Performances will take place on six stages across Lakeshore Road East from Navy to Allan streets. Each night will showcase established and up-and-coming artists from all roots and branches of Jazz, including Acid, Latin, Dixeland, Smooth, World Music, Ragtime, Swing, Blues, Fusion, Folk and more. There will also be a floating stage thanks to CharterAbility, an Oakville-based charity that provides an accessible boating experience for people with physical limitations or other personal circumstances. TD Downtown Oakville Jazz Festival Committee Chairman Ronnie Brown described how one boat will hold performers while another will hold spectators. The boats will leave the Oakville Power Boat Club on Water Street and travel along Sixteen Mile Creek. He continued the jazz festival is a familyfriendly, musical event that is great for all ages. Now in its 24th year, the event continues to attract huge crowds and performers to walk the downtown streets, enjoy live music and explore the shops and restaurants. Brown said the festival typically sees 80,000-120,000 people over the course of the two nights when the weather cooperates. Headlining this years event are Hamilton's Juno award winner Harrison Kennedy (Friday, TD Centennial Stage from 10-11:30 p.m.), Quebec's Juno award winner Steve Hill (TD Towne Square Stage from 10:1511:45 p.m.), Mississauga's Alex Pangman & Her Alleycats (Saturday, TD Centennial Stage from 10-11:30 p.m.) and acclaimed American banjo player and singer Cynthia Sayer (Saturday, TD Towne Square Stage from 8:30-10 p.m.). Brown said residents should also keep an eye out for The Trio of Oz featuring Rachel Z and Omar Hakim (Friday, TD Towne Square Stage from 8-9:30 p.m.) and the Dan Brubeck Quartet (Saturday, TD Towne Square Stage from 10:30 p.m.-midnight). "Omar Hakim is a legendary drummer that's played with Sting, Weather Report and David Bowie," he said. "He's a worldclass drummer." Brubeck, he added, is also a world-class drummer and the son of the late jazz pianist Dave Brubeck. "He actually played in his dad's band for a while before his father died and has a pretty hot quartet of his own now," Brown said. The festival also features a number of returning artists, including Oakville singers Liz Loughrey and Kathleen Kovacs. Loughrey will perform Saturday at TD Towne Square Stage from 7-8 p.m. She is currently being promoted by Massey Hall in Toronto and is playing sold out shows for growing grounds across the GTA. Kovacs, who made her Oakville Jazz see Festival on p.56 B O A T S O N C A N V A S Showcase artistic talent at Paint the Lake, part of Bronte Lake Walk Budding and professional artists are being encouraged to get creative during the Bronte Lake Walk next week. Oakville residents are invited to showcase their artistic talent at Bronte Heritage Park Thursday, Aug. 4 from 4-8 p.m. Paint the Lake is held in conjunction with Bronte Lake Walk and is part of the Town of Oakville's Summer Cultural Connection events series. Participants will be asked to choose a picturesque scene of Bronte Habour and create their own masterpiece for a chance to win prizes. Paint supplies and canvases will be provided while supplies last. Each painting will then be shared on the Bronte Village Facebook page (facebook. com/BronteEvents) where people are encouraged to like their favourites between Aug. 5-12. Prizes will be awarded in four categories: kids (10 and under), youth (11-17), adults (18+) and professional. The contest runs from Aug. 5-12.
