The Oakville Gymnastics Centre, home of the Antoinettes competitive gym team, is hosting the women's Artistic Youth Provincial Championships Friday through Sunday (May 5-7) for competitors aged 12 and under. Competitors aged 13 and over com peted last weekend in another meet, called the Elite Provincial Championships in Toronto. The Antoinettes had one competitor in this event -- Robin Merry in the Open 1 class. The Antoinettes have five competi tors who will join the more than 300 competitors expected to converge on Oakville this weekend, and they include ... · in pre novice 1: Elyse McIntyre, Mikaela Rodgers and Angela Schempp; · in pre-junior 2: Claire Merry; · and in junior 1: Alison Schinkel. Events include vault, uneven paral lel bars, balance beam and floor exer cise. These athletes are the absolute best young gymnasts in Ontario and come from across the province to compete in various categories and age groups. In addition to training up to 24 hours weekly, each girl has earned a spot at these championships through their per formance at three previous qualifying meets. It's a level of competition avail able to them only once a year. Opening ceremonies begin at 9:30 a.m. on Friday, May 5 and closing cer emonies will conclude the prestigious event on Sunday, May 7 at 8:55 p.m. The action is continuous each and every day. Daily admission is $10 for adults and $5 for seniors and children. They are available for purchase at the rec centre throughout the event. Plan on attending and you just may catch a future Olympian in action. The Oakville Gymnastics Centre, home of the Antoinettes, is now in its 26th year, and offers gymnastics for both boys and girls, 18 months to adult. The club offers artistic gymnastics, power tumbling and trampoline pro grams. While there is great emphasis on the grass roots, recreational program, which helps to build discipline, confi dence and fitness in children, a full competitive program, under the Antoinettes banner, is available for ath letes who wish to make a greater com mitment to the sport.
