Park student, is one of six Oakville Aquatic Club members who have already quali fied for the Canadian Olympic trials. Kevin, Scott, David Landry, Sam Thrall: BR O N ZE 100 free relay Olympic class boat, I was not surprised when I saw 105 boats on the start line the first day o f the regatta. Winds throughout the regatta were typically light, but we had 3 o f the 8 races that were as much as 15 knots. With so many competitors, the key to success in the regatta was to be consistent. I, fortunately, was extremely consistent and managed to score a 6,9,2,4,1,9,9 in the first 7 races. This made the regatta all the more exciting as I would go into the last race o f the regatta in 2nd place, only one point out o f first place. A match race ensued from the start gun all the way to the first mark... and Bill Hardesty o f San Diego, California would focus all o f his attention on me. I initiated a tacking duel early on and we proceeded to do about 20 tacks as opposed to the normal 5-10 on the first leg. Bill and 1 would round 25th and 30th respectively around the first mark. This was good fo r me. I hadn '/ sailed a very bad race so fa r and in sailing we get to discard our worst race o f a regatta. Bill had sailed a 23rd in the previous race, a finish he wished to discard. The problem now was: could I keep him back there and would the guy in third place have a good enough race to pass us both and win the regatta. Bernard Luttmer, in third place in the regatta was in 10th in this race. A finish o f 4th or better would secure him the regatta so long as Bill and I stayed back in the fleet. We raced around the course passing boats like crazy. At the finish it was Bernard, 5th; Bill, 9th; and myself, 20th. Luttmer would end up in third in the regatta; Bill would manage a one-point victory over me, in second. A very exciting regatta and a great regatta fo r me. This was a huge regatta fo r me as it was the last chance that I would have to match myself up against all o f my Canadian com petitors. I was top Canadian here, a good thing just 3 months before the trials. My next major competition was (earlier this month) in France. I represented Canada and Queen's University at the World University Sailing Championships. I placed a respectable 7th place there in what was a very tough fleet. Many o f the Olympic representatives from other coun tries were in attendance and racing was tight. My first day with finishes o f 10,13,13 would prove to hurt my overall results. 1 came out fighting after that, posting finish es between 4 and 9 in the days to follow. I am currently in North Carolina prac ticing in windy conditions fo r the next few weeks. 1 will return home to Canada in May in preparation fo r the Olympic trials.
