The Hollow, which is currently playing at the Oakville Centre for the Performing Arts, seems to fare all right without him. In fact, Inspector Colquhoun, played by Chris Worsnop, did a dandy job o f solving the mystery, and Worsnop was defi nitely one o f the better actors in the 12-member BurlOak Theatre cast. Opening night saw a few missed lines, which led to som e awkward silences on stage. This may have been what got the play off to a slow start, but intermission appeared to represent more than just a break for members o f the audience to stretch their legs and purchase some refreshments. In this case, it seemed to give the cast an opportunity to regroup and come back with a faster paced production. And, with the exception of the feeble gun shot sounds, the play turned out to be a good little who dunit, sprinkled with hum our and offering a thinly disguised moral message. The life o f the party, and it really was a sort of party on stage with hosts and invited guests, was PSYCHIC FAIR APRIL 28, 29, 30 Theatre Review Virginia McEwen, who plays Henrietta Angkatell. Every time Henrietta entered, the pace of the play and the enthusiasm of its cast seemed to increase significantly. It was as though Henrietta were injecting life into the other characters with her nat ural buoyancy and vivacity. But then, maybe vitality isn't appropriate for a murder scene, although it certainly helped in this case. Even Henrietta's grief was expressed with a certain amount of power and dignified piz zazz. She was a force to be reckoned with and her force changed the dynamics of each scene. And then there is Lady Lucy Angkatell (Verna Jenner) who adds humour to each scene in her own esoteric way. Typical of Agatha Christie, whose other famous fic mtesse' tional detective is the elderly gossip, Miss Marple, Lucy reflects a paradoxical philoso phy and knack for the absurd that offers the comic relief needed in most mysteries or dramas. Those who have read The Hollow will, of course, know who commits the crime, but may be pleasantly surprised at the way the play sticks to the story despite its numerous omissions, including Poirot. Those who have not read the book but like a good mystery are sure to enjoy this whodunit as it unfolds on the Oakville Centre stage.
