Oakville Fire nominated Sim to say `thanks' continued from p.1 The award recognizes individuals for outstanding contributions to fire and carbon monoxide safety. It also recognizes those who have contributed to the success of a local fire department and its prevention efforts. A firefighter with the Etobicoke Fire Department for approximately 30 years, Sim made the transition to teaching about 18 years ago, running a firefighter-training program at Humber College. It was in this position at Humber he greatly assisted the Oakville Fire Department's Fire Prevention Week Kick-Off event. "Our Fire Prevention Week Kick-Off is the largest thing our fire department puts on for the public each year.... Typically the event attracts 3,000-3,500 people," said Oakville Fire Department Fire Prevention Officer Glenn Barwell. "The way our event runs is we need more than 100 volunteers just to staff all the different activities we put on for the public that day. Barwell said as a result of Sim's actions, the Oakville Fire Department got volunteers to hold its event and the pre-service firefighters earn a letter for their Ian Sim portfolio that will help them get work. The students also get the opportunity to interact with members of the public and learn being a firefighter also involves an educational fire prevention component. Sim has performed this service for the last 15 years, however, when the Oakville Fire Department contacted Humber to make arrangements for this year's 17th Fire Prevention Week Kick-Off, they discovered he had retired. "That gave us time to reflect on everything he has done for the Oakville Fire Department," said Barwell. "We thought a nice send-off would be to nominate him for this Fire Safety Award." Barwell said Sim's dedication to fire prevention is all the more appreciated because he is a training officer who has communicated that message of the importance of fire prevention education to the next generation of firefighters. "He believes wholeheartedly in the idea that education is so important when it comes to preventing fires. It wasn't just about training firefighters to respond, but knowing that if we get to people early, we can prevent fires from occurring," said Barwell. "That was something he was a strong advocate for." Sim said he knows the importance of fire prevention education from his career as a firefighter. "I knew the importance of interaction with the public and public service and volunteerism, so in the Humber program I taught I built in a number of activities that the students could do, some they could choose from, some they were scheduled for," said Sim. "Because I live in Oakville and because I've known a lot of people in the Oakville Fire Department over the years, it was just a perfect fit."
