The donation was collected during the local club's annual swimming fundraiser and a cheque was presented last Tuesday (May 31) by Oakville Masters coach Mette Novais and club swimmers to Susan Coyne, resource development manager for BBBSH. One swimmer and their spouse offered to match all donations raised by the club, doubling the $5,800 raised to a total of $11,600. "These funds will allow Big Brothers Big Sisters of Halton to directly improve the lives of the 1,200 local children that we help through our mentoring and other programs and match even more children with a positive adult role model, creating a future where anything is possible," said Murilo Cruz, BBBSH board member. Participants raised the funds through a series of hour-long swims where swimmers chose whether to swim continuously for an hour, trying to swim as many laps of the pool as they could or by participating in relay swims where each team of up to five swimmers completed 25 metre sprints for 60 minutes. The events took place in early April at White Oaks and Centennial pools. Of the 112 swimmers who participated, there were 15 relay teams that swam a total of 69 km and 41 individual swimmers that swam a total of 111 km in an hour. "It was a fun week with lots of great swimming," said Novais. "Our Masters swimmers are committed to giving back to the Oakville community, and once again they've done so with great enthusiasm." This is the eighth year of the Oakville Masters Swim Club charity swim in support of community charities.
