Startup funding of $125,000 for the foundation has been unanimously approved by the Halton District School Board. The money will be taken from the board's reserve for working funds and is to be repaid by the foundation within its first year of operation. There was no discussion on the funding approval, but the charitable foundation has been under development since its approval in 1998. Details of the foundation's constitution, devel opment and use of startup funds were provided in a written report by education director Dusty Papke. The startup expenditure will be used to hire a chief administrative officer to handle daily opera tions, plus an office secretary and necessary sup plies and equipment. Cost of space was not seen as an issue because the board currently has surplus school space. With the approval, the charitable foundation can soon start accumulating revenue through fundraising and solicitations. The revenues will be directed to support the board's students and schools. The foundation was registered and ready to start operations by last June. For the past year a committee has been devel oping operating principles for the foundation, which are currently under review by legal counsel. The committee was chaired by Brenda Kearney and included community members with experience in establishing and working with char itable foundations. Gerry Smith build his business, Smith also enjoyed sum m er vacations with his fam ily at their M uskoka cottage. V isitation was held M onday in Burlington and a funeral service was held Tuesday at St. Jude's A nglican Church. In lieu o f flowers, expressions o f sym pathy to the charity of choice would be appreciated by the family.
