Due to concerns over Y2K computer problems, students didn't return from their two-week holiday break last Christmas until Jan. 10th. Next w inter's Christmas break involves similar timing, with classes end ing Friday, Dec. 22nd and resuming Monday, Jan. 8th. But this time, it's a scheduling con flict with New Year's Day and not Y2K concerns that's causing the delay. Holding the break a week earlier would have prevented a Monday return date, since the Jan. 1 holiday falls on that day. The late Christmas holiday start was approved as part of the 2000/2001 calen dar by the Halton District School Board. Other proposed 2000/2001 calendar rec ommendations include starting the school year the day after Labour Day, Sept. 5th, and finishing June 29th. Other school holidays will include Thanksgiving Day, Oct. 9th; Spring Break, March 12th-16th; Good Friday, April 13th; Easter Monday, April 16th and Victoria Day, May 21st. Schools will also be closed to students for professional activity/development days on Oct. 6th, Dec. 1st, Feb. 2nd and June 28th. Those days will be used by teachers for activities like communicating with parents about student progress, training on curriculum, assessment/evaluation reporting, course planning/preparation, submission and verification of secondary school marks. High school exam periods will be Jan. 25th-31st and June 20th-26th for semestered schools and June 13th-26th fpr non-semestered schools.
