On May 5 and May 11, fraudsters claiming to be with Revenue Canada contacted a resident of Oakville and Georgetown. The scammers told the victims they owed money and threatened to arrest them unless they made payments using iTunes gift cards. The suspects then directed the victims to several locations where they could purchase the cards. Police say the CRA would never act in this manner and would de nitely never accept iTunes gift cards as payment. Police are also asking vendors who sell iTunes gift cards to be vigilant to large purchases of these cards and initiate a conversation with the buyer to ensure they are not being defrauded. An alert employee at a pharmacy in Hamilton prevented a victim from purchasing $3,000 worth of the cards, but they had already transferred $3,000 worth of the gift cards they'd purchased at two other stores.
