The Pass the Puck for ALZ charity hockey tournament will take place at 8:30 a.m. at CanLan Ice Sports and will see 350 participants consisting of 18 teams in the women's division and six teams in the men's division. Lisa Gillis, event chair and organizer, said the event at the 2300 Cornwall Rd. hockey rink has already raised $12,000 for the Alzheimer's Society of Hamilton and Halton. It will support various programs it offers to those living with Alzheimer's or dementia, as well as their families. Pass the Puck for ALZ The event is in memory of Gillis' father, Robert (Bob) Lachance. "Unfortunately, my story is so similar to many others that have a loved one who has been diagnosed with Alzheimer's or dementia," she said. "Our shared love of hockey was always a special connection between us, and after his passing, I knew I wanted to do this tournament in his honour." Danielle Arbour, public education co-ordinator for the Alzheimer Society of Hamilton and Halton, will be joined by Gillis for the puck drop. The Crosstown Trail is part of Oakville's 57 km of heritage trails, which feature information stations telling more than 80 stories about the town and its residents. "Enhancements to the Crosstown Trail will provide all residents of Oakville with increased opportunities for recreation," said Mayor Rob Burton. "This project is a valued addition to the cultural heritage of our community and a significant and lasting way we can honour Canada's 150th anniversary." A 3-km portion of the Crosstown Trail, from Neyagawa Boulevard to Eighth Line, will feature widened sections and its limestone screening will be replaced with asphalt for easier access for cyclists and persons with disabilities.
