Members of the Toronto vocal group Cadence, from left David Lane (baritone/vocal percussion), Ross Lynde and Lucas Marchand (both tenors), and Kurt Sampson (bass/ vocal percussion), lead a workshop with members of Oakville's Tempus Choral Society at Knox Presbyterian Church on April 12. | submitted photo Tempus hosts workshop by Cadence Oakville's Tempus Choral Society recently held a workshop featuring Toronto vocal group Cadence. Held at Knox Presbyterian Church, the workshop was for the 100-voice Oakville choir and members from eight other vocal groups from Hamilton to Toronto. The vocal seminar, which was held earlier in this month, covered microphone use, vocal projection, singing high pitches without strain, scat, simulating various musical instruments and other techniques. The quartet features: David Lane, baritone and vocal percussion; tenors Ross Lynde and Lucas Marchand, and Kurt Sampson, bass and vocal percussion -- the group was founded and is managed by Carl Berger. Cadence also sang its a cappella arrangement of iconic Canadian singer, songwriter Gordon Lightfoot's The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald. The group's tribute arrangement and music video release were commissioned in 2015 to mark the 40th anniversary of the sinking of the Edmund Fitzgerald. Funding for the workshop and other choral education projects comes from a three-year Ontario Trillium Foundation grant received by the Tempus Choral Society in 2015. Children aged seven to 14 also have the opportunity to join Tempus4Us, a free, no-audition children's choir led by Tempus music director Brian Turnbull. The children's choir currently has 22 members and is aiming to expand to 50. Anyone looking to join is asked to contact Turnbull at 905-466-2168. Tempus4Us will perform at the Society's 2016 spring concert on Sunday, May 8.
