Annual Earth Week clean up is happening Saturday by Julia Le Oakville Beaver Staff 5 | Thursday, April 21, 2016 | OAKVILLE BEAVER | www.insideHALTON.com The Oakville Community Centre for Peace, Ecology and Human Rights (OCCPEHR) is asking residents to get their hands dirty for the 25th annual Earth Week Clean Up of Natural Sites. The clean up of the lakefront, parks, trails and other green space in the community takes place Saturday (April 23) from 9-11 a.m. "We look forward to everyone pitching in as our local environment truly needs your attention and support," stated Stephen Dankowich, executive director of OCCPEHR, in a media release. "Help clean up a park, trail, ravine, green space, woodlot or lakefront near to where you live. There are 44 locations throughout Oakville confirmed for clean up." All locations will be staffed by a variety of community groups and volunteers, including the Bronte Creek Community Residents Association, West River Residents Association, Bronte Village Residents Association, the Clearview Oakville Community Alliance (COCA), the Friends of Bronte Creek Park and the South Peel Naturalists Club. The clean up is being sponsored by the Town of Oakville's Parks and Open Space Department, which provides bags and gloves and has produced a large map highlighting the 44 clean up sites that are now prominently on display in municipal facilities, such as libraries, recreation centres and at Town Hall. Halton Region has sponsored two garbage trucks, one dedicated to picking up metal and the other to pick up garbage. Pitch-In Canada is also providing bags. Last year, more than 1,000 volunteers helped remove 3,900 kilograms of garbage from 42 locations throughout Oakville. "The Clean Up campaign promotes awareness and respect for biodiversity, local nature and our trails, parks and waterways," stated Don Meade, an OCCPEHR board member, in a press release. "We are beautifying the local natural environment, protecting wildlife and benefiting people's health while doing our best to encourage environmental activism in our schools and our community." He noted the organization is pleased to see many people pitching in to make a difference in the local environment. Since 1992, 76,000 students and residents have participated in Earth Week Clean Up, the largest community-wide Clean Up in Canada during Earth Week, Meade added. To mark the milestone of reaching 25 years since the clean up began, a commemorative celebration will take place after the clean up from 1-2 p.m. in the atrium at Town Hall on Trafalgar Road. All past and present coordinators, volunteers and sponsors are invited to receive a Town pin from Parks and Open Space Department Director Chris Mark, who will also be expressing his personal thanks to everyone.
