Today, 25 years later, it's still on top of the technology field and is preparing to celebrate its milestone. The River Oaks Public School community is gearing up for the 25th anniversary celebrations taking place Thursday, May 12 at the school, 2173 Munn's Ave. Principal Mike Bukovcan said the nostalgic event will begin at 5 p.m. with performances from bands and choirs and a barbecue, followed by speeches from the Director of Education, the school's first principal Gerry Smith and others. "We're looking forward to having the former graduates and staff and community members come and reconnect and see what the continuum of learning has been over the past 25 years," Bukovcan said. "We hope to share that and celebrate the rich educational experience kids have had here over the years." Then and Now will take a look at the school's history through artefacts, a time capsule, a slide show and videos, highlighting technology advances and how the school has evolved to include 21st century learning through innovative computer coding that also integrates important subjects such as mathematics and language. "The school opened as a technology lighthouse for the province," Bukovcan shared with the Oakville Beaver. He described how it had a partnership with Apple and each student had their own computer, a "big deal" during that time. "It was such a sought-after school that some property values went up in the area because parents wanted their kids to come here," Bukovcan added, noting how the school often entertained politicians, media and international guests who wanted to see how technology was being integrated into the classroom. Today, the school continues to incorporate technology in its classrooms as they learn about computer coding and even stop animation. Bukovcan said the school is still honouring "ingenuity.
