B6 THE OAKVILLE BEAVER Wednesday, February 2, 2000 Alan Frew and Friends V Lighthouse and its `feel-good songs' defy time The Alan Frew and Friends benefit concert is now in its fifth year in Oakville, featuring several o f Canada' s finest entertainers. B y K a th y Y a n c h u s SPECIAL TO THE BEAVER It's the spirit of the songs that keeps Light house going, according to one of the group's founding members, guitarist Ralph Cole. "They are feel-good songs which stand the ages. Lighthouse is a grassroots kind of band," says Cole. "People still love the songs." When Lighthouse came together back in 1968, the composite fused together jazz, rock and classical sounds. Members were not expecting the huge success and following they would gamer. Now, Lighthouse is a part of Canadian rock music history, and the final chapter has not been written. Although members "passed 30 a long time ago," Lighthouse is going strong, still in demand. They disbanded after enormous success and a series of firsts, members going their own ways, but reunited in 1982 for a week end of concerts at Ontario Place. They con tinue to rehearse and play together, usually scheduling about 15 concerts over the sum mer months. Kindergarten & Grade One OPEN HOUSE and REGISTRATION Tuesday, February 8 - 1:30 - 8:00 p.m. Saturday, February 19 - 10:00 am-3:00 p.m. Full time program: September 2000 to June 2001, 7:30 a.m. - 6:30 p.m. · Small classes · Qualified experienced teachers · Balanced programming "We enjoy playing music together. These are really good musicians. We're all a little older, but we have a tremendous amount of energy, and we play for each other as well as the audience," says Cole. Between 1969 and 1974 Lighthouse released nine albums containing such hits as Sunny Days, Pretty Lady and One Fine M orn ing, winning four Juno awards as Canada's best rock band along the way. Part of its legacy involves the origination of the cross-Canada rock tour. It was also the first rock band to headline the Newport, M on terey and Boston Globe jazz fests. And the band represented Canada at Expo in Japan in 1970. Its members pioneered collaborations with film and television productions, created Ballet High with the Royal Winnipeg Ballet Company and performed with principal sym phonies across North America. In their prime, the Lighthouse musicians performed at all major halls and rock festivals around the world. These musical legends are also involved "in a few charity projects," one of those being the Alan Frew and Friends concert at the Oakville Centre on Saturday (Feb. 5th). "We all do other things, but we enjoy get ting together," says Cole. It all began way back in 1968 when Skip Prokop (drums) and Paul Hoffert (keyboards) met in New York where the former was fin ishing his final performance with The Pau pers, and the latter was completing an offBroadway musical he'd written. The two musicians ended up beside each other on a flight to Toronto soon after and discussed the idea o f putting a new band together. Once Prokop was able to convince Cole to leave Michigan for Canada, Lighthouse started to take shape. Now, more than 30 years later, they're still in great shape and ready to rock at Alan and Frew and Friends V, which has become an annual fund-raising concert for Camp Trilli um. Camp Trillium was established in 1984 to offer a camp environment to children with cancer and their families.
