www.insideHALTON.com | OAKVILLE BEAVER | Thursday, April 14, 2016 | 18 Campfire Variety Night fundraiser for build benefitting children by Julia Le Oakville Beaver Staff Built on the belief every child should have the opportunity to experience personal development in a fun, safe and healthy environment, Volunteer Builders has established a solid foundation for its projects over the past 15 years. Each year, members of the Oakville-based non-profit organization design, build or renovate cabins and other spaces at a chosen camp located in Ontario. This year, it is planning a build to benefit YWCA Camp Tapawingo in Parry Sound. It's hosting its annual Campfire Variety Night April 16 at the Operating Engineers Banquet Hall, 2245 Speers Rd., from 5:30-9 p.m. to raise funds for the build and its operating costs. Tickets cost $20 for adults, $10 for children 12 and under and a family pass for $50. Buffy Knowlton, one of eight founding members, said 100 per cent of Volunteer Builders is comprised of volunteers, who not only give their time and efforts to the actual build that occurs before camp season, but also donate the design and working drawings and source materials. Members represent a variety of professions, including professional tradespeople, architects, lawyers, bankers and teachers, she said. The variety night is one of three fundraisers hosted annually to support the work they do. "If you've ever gone to camp, you will totally understand what it's about and if you've never been to camp, you'll get a great taste of it," said Knowlton, a 28-year Oakville resident. Performers include the Juno Awardnominated Gary Rasberry, local celebrity Carole Bertuzzi Luciani, known as the Moodivator, and Mark Baldwin and Tom Knowlton, the hosts of Camp Cariboo, an award-winning children's television series. Canadian Camping Association past presidents Jane McCutcheon and John Jorgenson (current President of the International Camping Fellowship) will also take the stage. Knowlton, an author and workshop facilitator, said she hopes residents will attend. She noted it is rewarding for the members to help maintain a space for children to be children. "I feel very blessed with everything we have in our life and I believe very much in paying it forward," said Knowlton. "It's also a lot of fun," she continued. "We make a difference. I grew up in camping myself, so did my husband and our children and I understand the value of what camps offer children. To me, if we can help those camps do what they do more effectively, more safely, more creatively, then it doesn't get any better than that." Scott Hartman, a 15-year group volunteer, said he's gained more than the personal satisfaction of helping children. "I started off useless with a tool," he shared. Over the years, he said he's gained a number of trade skills and developed great friendships. For more on Volunteer Builders, visit volunteerbuilders.org.
