It was all part of March for Meals -- a North American-wide event aimed at raising awareness about the nutritional and social needs of an aging population. It saw MacLean team up with the Oakville Kiwanis Meals on Wheels to deliver a hot lunch to Fraser and Rosemary O'Shaunessy. For some residents in the community, the trusted Meals on Wheels volunteer, who delivers a hot meal, a warm smile and friendly visit, is sometimes the only person they see that day. The service provides that social connection and also serves as a well-being check on the meal recipient. Fraser, an 87-year-old veteran, who played for the Montreal Junior Canadiens hockey team from 1947-49, welcomed the opportunity to meet MacLean. The senior had lots to share with the former Hockey Night in Canada host during MacLean's visit to their home, including how Fraser's own father had advised his son there was no money in hockey and that he should go to university. Oakville Meals on Wheels has been delivering a hot lunch five days a week for the past 40 years, supporting hundreds of our senior neighbours and those with disabilities to live a healthier and independent life in their own homes, according to Gardner. Research proves with the right nutrition and a daily well-being check, seniors enjoy a greater quality of life and independence, often avoiding hospitalization and a move to more cost-regulated living arrangements, a release states. This, in turn, saves extensive health-care costs while assisting those seniors who prefer it, to remain happily and safely in their own home.
