Police warning after senior scammed Halton police say an Oakville senior was scammed out of nearly $9,000 this month after being contacted by someone claiming to be investigating illegal purchases on his credit card. On March 5, the victim received a telephone call from an individual claiming the senior's credit card had been used fraudulently in China. The caller also claimed the RCMP was assisting in the investigation. Police said the senior allowed the caller to have remote access to his computer and online banking and then the caller requested the victim wire transfer money to China to assist the RCMP in tracking it. The caller then instructed the senior to make separate withdrawals from three bank branches, which police say was done to avoid detection. The senior was then told to attend four different Money Marts in the area and wire transfer the funds to China. The victim transferred nearly $9,000 as instructed by the suspect. The senior's bank made him aware he was being victimized following the unusual withdrawals, but not soon enough to stop the wire transfers.
