Attia, was re-arrested at the Oakville home of his uncle. He'd been on his way there to do renovation work when he was stopped in Bronte, and was found by the police sleeping there afterwards. A further search of Attia's car turned up a variety of other explosive materials in the trunk, along with clothes and tools. The trunk items included: a box of Pyrodex premium muzzle loading pro pellant; a diagram of a home-made mortar; a nylon, cylindrical cone tube; an unknown black powder; numerous empty electrical light packages; a glass jar coated with an unknown black residue; four home-made and three commercial wicks; a ceramic pestle containing charcoal residue; a pill jar containing gun powder; an empty con dom package; a black cylindrical tube; a ceramic mortar; wiring line; an A/C power cord attached to a light switch; three liquor bottles; a plastic jar con taining improvised explosive compo nents; an unknown white powder; two cylindrical tubes; a barbecue igniter; metal tubes capped off at one end; and, 200A solvent. "All of these can be used for the pur poses of making explosive devices," said Jago. The bomb found in his car was wrapped in black electrical tape -- which police said would make its explo sion more violent. In a video-taped statement after his arrest, Attia said he had made the bomb for next Victoria Day. Upon his initial arrest, he'd refused to speak to police about the explosive or where he got the materials for it, said Jago. Yesterday in court, Attia testified that he and a cousin had attempted to explode it in Welland the week before his arrest, but were hampered by rain. He had kept the bomb in the car since that failed attempt. Defence lawyer Calvin Martin said his client was caught up in the unfortu nate circumstances of being a young Muslim found with explosives a month after the World Trade Centre buildings were destroyed by terrorists. "I don't fault the police for being cautious, I'd fault them if they weren't cautious. I don't fault the Crown for using Sept. 11 as a reason for keeping my client for 27 days in jail," said Martin. However, he said out of every 10 boys, three to four have likely experi mented with pyrotechnics. "There's a fine line between fire crackers and the material he was using," said Martin. "Just because a terrorist blew up something does not make what this boy did more morally reprehensible," said Martin. The Crown talked of danger, said Martin. "The danger is to him (Attia), his being suspected of being a terrorist." Attia admitted that since his arrest he had been interviewed by intelligence security. "They would like you to take a lie detector test. Would you have any objection?" asked Martin. "No," replied Attia. Attia said he was bom in North York, is a Muslim, but doesn't strictly follow the religion -- particularly extrem ist philosophies. He does observe Muslim dietary rules, testified a co-worker. Attia testified he conducted "experi ments" into pyrotechnics and played with computers, not religion or politics. Asked about Sept. 11, he said, "I did n't feel people had to die. There were Muslims as well, as well as people from every other religion. It was very unnec essary." Neither the police nor the Crown could find a link between Attia and any terrorist groups. Jago said Attia misled police from the start, when he told police he'd left his insurance, vehicle registration and driver's licence at home. It wasn't until he testified at his sen tencing yesterday that he told what Jago called the "innocent" excuse for why he was carrying the explosives. Jago said that Attia's combination of marijuana alcohol on Oct. 11, mixed with driving an uninsured vehicle carry ing explosives was "a recipe for disas ter." Jago said that after Sept. 11, "we're in an era where the police and the pub lic have a right to look at things in a more sinister light." Jago said the bomb, which was exploded by the police, resulted in no pretty lights or sounds. "It exploded, pure and simple." In his sentencing, LeDressay noted Attia had no criminal record and had an abundance of character witnesses. All praised Attia in their testimony. Attia, who didn't finish Grade 12, said he'd been contemplating a career in pyrotechnics, but hadn't done much research into the schooling involved. Attia was also questioned on the wit ness stand as to his background. His parents came to Canada from Egypt in 1974 and are today divorced. His father Esmail, who testified yester day, operates a travel agency and does a lot of traveling to the Middle East. Attia lives in Scarborough with his mother and two sisters. His mom also works at the Peak Freans plant. "I swear to God 1000% that it's a hobby," said the senior Attia of his son's fascination with pyrotechnics. He admitted he was "surprised" to hear his son had an explosive in his car. A string o f character witnesses appeared on Attia's behalf. Many expressed surprise to hear of his possession of marijuana, no vehicle paperwork and explosives. Some friends attested to the fact that Attia would show them his pyrotechnic "experiments" in a Scarborough munic ipal yard, many of which "fizzled out." Teams of Sheridan College computer programming students, along with student programmers from a dozen universities will do just that at Sheridan on Saturday. Up to 30 teams are expected to partici pate in this `battle of the brains' on Saturday, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Sheridan Centre for Animation & Emerging Technologies located at the Oakville campus at 1430 Trafalgar Rd. At stake will be the right to compete in the Association for Computing (ACM) International Collegiate Programming World Finals in Honolulu next March. Sheridan will have four teams of three students in the contest. The Nov. 10 event is one of 64 region al competitions, involving 2,800 teams, being held around the world this fall. All Sheridan competitors will be thirdyear students from the college's Computer Science Technology program. Two teams have been recruited from each of Sheridan's Trafalgar campus in Oakville and its Davis campus in Brampton. They will compete head-to-head with teams from Queen's University, the University of Waterloo, McMaster University, University of Toronto and McGill University, among others. During the competition, each team will be huddled around one computer and will be faced with a host of complex, realworld problems that must be solved in a set period of time. The competition will test programming skills, creativity and teamwork. The winner of this regional competition will advance to the world finals in Honolulu next March. The IBM-sponsored ACM International Collegiate Programming Contest, was established more than 30 years ago and is the oldest and largest pro gramming competition in the world.
