The Jetta and GTI will offer a newly revised version of Volkswagen's renowned 1.8 T four-cylinder engine with 180 hp, up 30 from its previous output. Even more importantly for true driving enthu siasts, the torque output is now at 174 lbs./ft., an increase from 155 lbs. ft. from the prior version. Also new for the Jetta and GTI models in 2002 is the opportunity to order an optional 5-speed automatic transmission with Volkswagen's Tiptronic that allows the driver to shift the car manually without engaging a clutch. This combination of five speeds and Tiptronic is a first in the Jetta's com petitive segment. Also new in 2002 is an upgraded eight-speaker premium stereo that comes with an in-dash single player CD and cassette player (mid-model year availability). The boost in standard horsepower in the GTI coincides with Volkswagen's repositioning strategy for its famous "pocket rocket" coupe hatchback. Essentially, the German automaker is making it easier and more affordable than ever to wrap your hands around the wheel of a GTI and devour the road. The GTI will no longer come in two distinct GLS and GLX trim levels that offered high value but came standard with a host of equipment that might oth erwise be optional. Customers will now have the opportunity to buy a more basic, lower priced GTI, and then choose an engine option (1.8 T or VR6) and several stand alone options. The standard "base" 2002 GTI 1.8 T comes well stocked with more than 40 standard items and is priced at $25,895. The 2002 GTI's standard items include sports suspension, darkened taillights, sports seats, fog lights and 16-inch alloy wheels. Options with the 1.8 T are a leather package (seats, steering wheel, shift boot and knob), a "luxury pack age" with power glass sunroof and the Monsoon stereo, 17-inch alloy wheels and a cold weather package, i.e., heated located between the upper and lower car seat cushions. Inside, Volkswagen's compact offer ings have a sculpted environment equal to the exteriors' upper-level distinction. Matching fabrics are used along with other quality trim materials. The dash board, which has a finely textured sur face, surrounds an easy-to-read instrument binna cle with four cir cular dials, these are back-lit by a vibrant blue, with illuminated red needles. First and fore most a driver's car, the Jetta's and GTI's driving positions are para mount to the design. The seating positions are high, and seats are firm and well bolstered to pro vide Volkswagen's acclaimed orthope dic support and comfort. Controls are logically placed, with large dials for ventilation. A unique pump-operated handle adjusts the front seat heights and a tilting/telescoping steering wheel allows for a precise driv ing position. Intended for spirited driving, the run ning gear is designed for ride quality and dynamic control. At the front, a McPherson suspension strut concept is used, with an independent suspension via coil springs and lower wishbones. Positive caster gives the Jetta good directional stability under acceleration and hard braking, and a perfected strut layout minimizes drive force influence. The track-correcting torsion beam rear axle concept also has been enhanced in the Jetta, with high-volume rubber bushings, gas pressurized shocks, and separate dampers and coil springs to eliminate intrusion into the luggage area, improve spring response, and reduce noise and vibrations into the cabin area. In both the front and rear, stabilizer bars are used for body roll performance. A sports-tuned version of this system is available as an option with the GLS models ordered with the VR6 or 1.8 T engine. The Jetta's chassis also benefits from power-assisted rackand-pinion steering and four-wheel disc brakes (ventilated front) with the latest generation ABS. Both the Jetta GLS and GTI come with the added traction of Anti-Slip Regulations and Electronic Differential Locks.
