Situated across the street from St. Mildred's-Lightbourn School, the boys' school sits on an expansive and beautifully forested property in the heart of Old Oakville. The school bursts with positive energy and offers a sense of family to the 130 boys who currently attend. Its bright and modern learning spaces are equipped with the latest in educational technology, and each classroom is home to a maximum of 18 boys. Linbrook's program has been designed to reflect the latest research in boys' education and offer its students an exceptional learning experience in a fun and inspiring environment. Professionally trained, experienced and passionate educators inspire their students' natural love of learning through the use of movement, humour, hands-on learning and individualized academic programming. Linbrook's teachers are adept at offering an enriched mathematics' curriculum and engaging the boys' creative minds to develop strong reading and writing skills. At Linbrook, learning takes place both inside and outside the classroom walls, so in addition to providing a strong academic focus, students have ample opportuni- special advertising feature Learning that's geared to boys ties during the school day to engage in intramural sports, artistic pursuits, one-on-one music lessons, choir, public speaking and community awareness programs. Specific club activities include Lego, technology, martial arts, kickboxing, robotics, seasonal sports, games, drama, "Me to We", percussion ensembles, newspaper, guitar and visual arts. Students also participate in athletic events within the Private School Athletic Association. Amber Way, Head of School, speaks proudly of her staff and students. "The boys' brilliant smiles and endless enthusiasm toward school make every day rewarding for all of us. Everyone at Linbrook has quickly become a happy family, and we all work together to create an exceptional environment that is based on compassion, respect and shared goals," she said. Way expects enrolment to reach capacity as quickly as the fall. Several grades already have waitlists, and Way encourages families to apply soon to avoid disappointment. Once the school reaches capacity, the only grade accepting students will be Junior Kindergarten; applicants for Senior Kindergarten to Grade 8 will be placed on a waitlist. Mindfulness practiced at Rotherglen Walking the halls of Rotherglen, you might be surprised to see students and teachers in calm repose with eyes closed, or to hear a chime or "singing bowl" bringing everyone gently to attention. Rotherglen School has embraced mindfulness, the cultivation of focused awareness on the present moment through breathing. For a few minutes each day, faculty and students clear their thoughts and participate in breathing or movement exercises in preparation for learning. Current medical and educational research espouses the many benefits of mindfulness including enhanced concentration, improved selfregulation and anxiety reduction. Our students are learning through a variety of activities and discussions about cultivating a healthy mind. In Grade 1, children are setting up a peaceful place in their classroom where they can stop, breathe and enjoy looking at objects from nature. Grade 4 students are learning with great interest about their brain's plasticity, and how mindfulness helps the thinking part of their brain (the prefrontal cortex) to process emotions and manage decision-making. Grade 7 and 8 students have chosen to implement mindfulness practice during transition time. They have commented that after a few minutes of breathing exercises they are more ready to learn. The incorporation of mindfulness at Rotherglen School is just one of the many ways in which best practice in education is implemented. We are a school guided by tradition, and at the same time committed to incorporating current and relevant methodologies to support and enrich our students' learning.
