www.insideHALTON.com | OAKVILLE BEAVER | Thursday, January 21, 2016 | 14 An intense band of snow flurries from lake-effect snow squalls blanketed Oakville over the lunch hour Monday, dropping three to five centimetres of snow in just over an hour, as well as reducing visibility to near zero at times. It all served to bring traffic on the QEW through Oakville, pictured above left, to a crawl. Motorists on local streets fared no better. Pictured above right, vehicles are barely visible through the intense snow band, as motorists made their way along Third Line over the QEW. | photos by Graham Paine Oakville Beaver (Follow on Twitter @halton_photog or facebook.com/HaltonPhotog) Snow squalls early this week slowed the commute to a crawl by Julia Le Oakville Beaver Staff After an early afternoon dose of snow, Environment Canada issued yet another special weather statement Monday, warning Halton residents to prepare for poor winter driving conditions for the afternoon commute home. It was not wrong. The first bout of heavy snow fell around 1 p.m. while gusts of wind blew the snow around, making it difficult to see. Drivers experienced more snow squalls later in the day and into the evening with "rapidly changing and suddenly poor winter driving conditions" thanks to low visibility in blowing snow and bursts of heavier snow. The weather agency warned of a stiff west to northwest flow that was delivering a fresh cold Arctic air mass and lake-effect flurries from Lake Huron and Georgian Bay. "The winds are going to be strong enough to carry lake-effect snow bands quite far inland from Lake Huron and Georgian Bay," Environment Canada reported. Snowfall ranged between four to eight centimetres -- enough to snarl traffic on the Monday evening commute. ATTENTION: PISTOL & RIFLE SHOOTERS!
