Wednesday, August 29, 2001 THE OAKVILLE BEAVER Get kids involved in packing a healthy lunch (NC)-Eating a balanced, healthy diet is essential for children in their growing years and for adults at every age. As a parent, it is important to teach children nourishing eating habits at a young age to encourage a healthy lifestyle for years to come. So why not start with lunch? Lunches are a great way to involve children in meal planning and to encourage kids to eat healthy, tasty foods. "Lunch is an excellent opportunity to get kids excited about healthy foods," says Lois Ferguson, registered K toderotBlfc v?!ih K^Se b ft celebrationof growth M usic & m ovem ent Newborns to age 7 dietitian and Ocean Spray Health & Wellness Advisory Board member. "Kids love to be involved. Let them be part o f the fun of meal planning. This will encourage them to develop healthy eating habits." In order to make sure kids pick healthy foods, Ferguson recommends the following: Every great lunch begins at the gro cery store Bring children along for the trip to the grocery store. Encourage kids to pick a differ ent vegetable or fruit each week. Allow children to pick one healthy "treat," such as low-fat cook ies, dried cranberries or yogurt. BEFORE YOU BAG Take your time while preparing your child's lunch. It is just as impor tant as a ballet class or soccer game. Get your kids involved! Kids can help create their lunch by picking items from the cupboards and refriger ator at home, such as granola bars and cheese, or let kids spread the tuna mix ture on to bread, wash fruit and pack the lunch bag. A SAVORY BROWN BAG Use a variety of foods that cover each of the food groups. Make sure to include fruits or vegetables and dairy products to complement the bread of a sandwich. Kids enjoy "crunchy" foods. Incorporate crunchy foods, such as celery or low-fat crackers, into lunch es. Include healthy snacks to pre vent the im pulse eating o f "bad" foods. Try including dried or fresh fruit, yogurt, popcorn, raw veggies or apple sauce. Make sure healthy foods are easy to eat. For example, pre-peel and sec tion oranges and cut pineapple into bite-size pieces. Include a beverage into your child's lunchbox everyday -- add a juice, water or milk to ensure your child's savoury brown bag includes a refreshing drink to quench your child's thirst. The grass is always greener... kids often find classmates' lunches more appealing. Encourage kids to compile a "wish list' of items they Keyboards v?!th K-ste feq p lo rin gthe languoge, A rt & Science of Afaic at the Keyboard M u sjW 3arten J^Suzjto JiTroditonol 'fltegffSof music fets s Ife to e Y A M A H A P IA N O S "T R Y B E F O R E Y O U B U Y " W ith o u r R e n t to O w n P r o g r a m s B u rlin g to n 's on ly au th o rize d j Y am aha P iano | D ealer plus U S E D P IA N O S from $ 1 2 9 9 .
