Hosted by regional councillors Allan Elgar, Kevin Flynn and Fred Oliver, the event starts at 9:00 a.m. and will finish at 12:30 p.m. There is no charge to attend the event and a barbecue lunch will be available at a nominal fee of $5. Keynote speaker will be Carol Ann Cole, who recently received the Order of Canada for her volunteer work in raising over a million dollars for cancer research. Cole will speak about "Living your Dash," meaning individuals and small groups of determined people can make a difference regardless of the issues and obstacles that may appear to be in the way. Mayor of Ajax Steve Parish will bring the perspective of another GTA community and how it addresses growth. Dr. Pedro Pereya will speak on the impact of urban growth on fragmented ecosystems and will touch specifically on the Trafalgar Moraine and The Fourteen Mile Creek project. Rob Burton will address the Cost of Growth while representatives of Oakvillegreen who will discuss OPA 198. "We've been able to attract some excellent speakers and the event is designed for maximum public input in a setting that's a little less formal than Town Council," said Elgar. The morning will continue with a guest panel that includes citizen volun teers speaking from a variety of per spectives, including recreation, finance and conservation. These presentations are designed to encourage public partic ipation and provide input on a public response, to be presented to Council when the debate on growth in the Lands North of Highway 5 resumes Sept. 11. ORA hearings resume Sept. 11 Hearings on the Official Plan Amendment (OPA) #198, will resume next Tuesday (Sept. 1l).If need be, it will continue on Wednesday, Sept. 12. OPA No. 198 sets out to rezone 7,400 acres of agricultural land north of Hwy. 5 as urban, bringing it into line with Halton Region's plans for it. The hearings begin at 7:30 p.m. in Council Chambers at Town Hall on Trafalgar Road. All information regarding the sched ule and speaker's list will be available on the Town's Internet site at www.town.oakville.on.ca. While the Town's regular Planning & Development Council will convene on Sept. 10 OPA 198 will not be discussed at that September 10 meeting. Petro-Canada has filed its response to the suit with Ontario's Ministry of Labour. Lueck said the Oakville unit can't drop the lawsuit since it involves more than just the Oakville unit. For instance, there's a charge involving the national union, he said. The national union was involved in reaching a three-year, 9.5% wage increase nationally, in the first of a twotiered bargaining process, after which union workers here who earned approximately $29 per hour, hit the picket line over pensions. They wanted pension based on gross pay not base rate. Whether that was a mistake, Lueck won't say. "Ninety-nine percent of the mem bership voted to go," he said, adding, though, the decision would always appear differently in hindsight. Lueck said Local 593 would like the company to provide, as sought in the lawsuit, repayment of benefits paid by the union to striking workers, as well as lost wages to summer students who never did get to work at Petro-Canada through a summer employment pro gram. Drug benefits are costing the union approximately $143,000 monthly, said Lueck. "An agreement could be signed tomorrow," he said. Even so, Local 593 was meeting this week to sort out numerous legal issues, including whether it's possible to divide its members out of the law suit, or some of its charges, said Lueck. "I thought w e'd have been back to work last Monday (Aug. 27)," admitted Lueck, yesterday. "If the company will accept the fact that they have to go before the Labour Board to face the music, which they created by not giving us a timely settle ment after leaving Port Moody, and drop the unfounded picketing charges, then this strike could end immediate ly," said Lueck. And again, on Friday, August 31, the union filed paperwork with the Labour Relations Board, again claim ing that the company had violated cer tain sections of the Labour Relations Act, in regard to the request for the law suit being dropped, and seeking an emergency hearing. The striking CEP members joined the annual Labour Day parade in Toronto on Monday, Sept. 3, an event which drew nearly 300 and ended at the Canadian National Exhibition (CNE), which was sponsored by PetroCanada.
