Consider: All of Something was created by a band that prior to this late-October A ll of Something, by the band Sports. How's that for scorning suspense and cutting to the release, I did not know even existed, and had actually disbanded by the time I got all obsessive with this cleverly crafted 23-minute post-punk/pop gem. All of Something is a university album. Created by ve students who banded together in 2012 at Kenyon College in Gambier, Ohio. It's an album propelled by a solid rhythm section, elevated by jangling guitars, and given fresh vitals by the vulnerable, plaintive, pliable voice of Carmen Perry. Alas, university life eventually ends. But for a sweet, singular moment in time these guys caught lightning in a bottle. Then came graduation, and the inevitable moving on: a few are trying to create new music, one is studying to become a doctor, another is teaching Latin. All told, this has been a banner year in music. Frankly, it's been hard to keep up with all the wonderful releases. For certain, it was a great year for women in the industry (many entries in my Top 25 are femalefronted, female-driven) and dogs (LPs by Palehound, Houndmouth, Houndstooth -- seriously). In conversation with my eldest, who shares (and possibly outdoes) my obsession with all things aural, eclectic and indie, it was agreed 2015 may well have been the best year in music since 2005 when our ears were treated to the likes of Alligator by The National; Picaresque by The Decemberists; and my favourite album of the past decade, I'm Wide Awake, It's Morning by Bright Eyes.
