Get Me Some. Blind since age one due to eye cancer, Healey picked up his first guitar at three years old. And it was at that young age he patented a revolutionary technique that went on to become a trademark of his per formance - playing the guitar flat on his lap. By the age of six he was playing and singing in public, and by his mid-teens recognized as a "musical prodi hits such as "Angel Eyes" and "See the Light" won't be neglected in his show. Kim Mitchell, Canadian musician and Sarnia native, will be delighting Oakville audiences with a per formance of the old and new at the Waterfront Festival this June. "It's a cross-section of everything," says Mitchell of his line-up for the festival, adding that he gets suggestions for his sets from fans on the Internet. Originally a mem ber of the early 1970s band Max Webster. Mitchell heard his call to solo work in the early 1980s, producing such best-selling albums as 'Shakin' Like a Human Being' (1986), which sold triple-platinum and won two Juno Awards. Despite his success in the studio, Mitchell continued his outdoor gigs across the country. "I love playing out doors," says Mitchell, who now resides in Toronto, and hopes the weather will hold out for his concert. In 1989, Mitchell recorded his album 'Rockland' in Los Angeles, which again won Mitchell a Juno Award for 'Male Vocalist Of The Year.' In November 1999, Mitchell recorded his latest solo album, 'Kimosabe', written with Andy Curran. "I like musicians that have their own stamp...guys who have pioneered their own way. As soon as you hear the first two mea sures, you know it's them," states Mitchell, adding that there is no one artist who has directly influenced his music. "Living life itself is where the music comes from." Mitchell's audience is usually comprised of adults in the 35 and over crowd, but he is always surprised to see a few teenagers up front. For his Waterfront performance, Mitchell will be including songs from his old and recent albums, as well as a Stevie Wonder song performed by his key board player. "Because you've done this for a long time, you have to change things up," quips Mitchell. And Mitchell's advice to aspiring Canadian musicians? "My attitude is, don't go into music because you want to be famous...do it because you love playing music. Not everyone's here to make their mil lion and be Bryan Adams," he says, emphasizing that whether on a stage or in a basement, the adrenaline of 'jamming' with a group of musicians is the same. "I always knew, that in some way, I'd be connected to, and involved in, the music business." It wasn't long before Healey's talent came to the attention of one of blues musics' elder statesmen, Albert Collins. Healey went on to share a bill with Collins at Toronto's Albert's Hall. Healey later shared the same stage with Stevie Ray Vaughan, and then B.B. King at Vancouver Expo '86. 'Tve been very fortunate to have met a lot of those people," Healey says. "And certainly any time I get a chance to even hear B.B. King, let alone sit in with the band, I enjoy that probably more than anything." It was during this period of playing Sunday night jam ses sions at Grossman's Tavem in Toronto that Healey met drummer Tom Stephen and bassist Joe Rockman, and The Jeff Healey Band was bom. It wasn't long before this talented trio came out with their first album, See the Light in 1988, with the Billboard 100 Top 5 ranking "Angel Eyes". The Road House Soundtrack followed in 1989, Hell to Pay was on its heels in 1990. Feel This in 1992, and then Cover to Cover in 1995. It was then, for the first time, that The Jeff Healey Band took a break and reaped the rewards of a suc cessful career for a few years. Of course Healey couldn't lay idle for five years. This Toronto guitarist found him self in front of television cam eras in an episode of Baywatch Nights, spinning jazz melodies on his own radio show for CBC (My Kinda Jazz) and managing his own company (Forte Records and Productions - signing Amanda Marshall). Then five years latei in March of 2000, fans celebrated the release of The Jeff Healey Band's new album, Get Me Some. Get Me Some has all the raw, lurid force its title sug gests. With the screaming harp of "Which One" and the slow molten groove of "Hey Hey", Healey also covers the Diane Warren-penned "I Tried" - to stunning effect.
