After reviewing a report and recommendations made by Halton District Catholic School Board (HCDSB) staff, trustees supported demolishing the building that was an education resource centre before it was vacated more than two months ago. Cost prohibitive HCDSB Facility Management Services Superintendent Giacomo Corbacio told the Oakville Beaver last month staff took steps to relocate the education resource centre staff to surplus classroom space in Burlington near the board's main Catholic Education Centre of ces because repairs of about $575,000 was too "cost prohibitive" to continue operating and maintaining the centre. As a result, the building was vacant, leaving HCDSB with liability risks. Staff recommended demolition Staff recommended the property be demolished at a cost of $200,000 and that it be fenced off with a lockable gate that would only allow access for grass-cutting vehicles, re trucks and ambulances. Police training in building In the meantime, Halton Regional Police Service is using the building so its of cers can go through training exercises until a demolition date has been nalized. HCDSB staff will continue to remediate the site and will be sending out communication to residents and posting information on the HCDSB website to inform residents of the board decision. They'll also be seeking Ministry of Education approval as well as municipal permits and approvals for the demolition.
