ClubLink CEO speaks to Glen Abbey Golf Club development plans by David Lea Oakville Beaver Staff 9 | Friday, October 30, 2015 | OAKVILLE BEAVER | www.insideHALTON.com ClubLink CEO K. Rai Sahi, whose company owns Glen Abbey Golf Club, has confirmed reports of plans for the world-famous golf course to become a high-end housing development. Sahi, who also owns the real estate development company Morguard Corp., confirmed an application has been put forward to develop the property, which has hosted the Canadian Open on many occasions. This confirms statements by Oakville Mayor Rob Burton and Ward 4 Town and Regional Councillor Allan Elgar, who noted on Oct. 23, the Town's Planning Services Department received a request for a pre-consultation on a potential development application on Glen Abbey Golf Club. The Glen Abbey Concept Master Plan, submitted to the Town, calls for the development of 3,000-3,200 residential units, as well as office and retail development opportunities. In a Thursday interview with the Oakville Beaver, Sahi said the proposal is indeed real, but emphasized the timeline for the project is considerable. "Assuming we get the zoning and while we will make an application to do homes and midrise and some retail, a lot will depend on what finally gets approved. That process could take Our plan presently indicates the valley will not be developed. It will become a park and/or walking trail that will be accessible to everybody. This will also be very beneficial to the city. It will increase the tax base potentially. Right now, they don't get a whole lot of property taxes from the golf course. ClubLink and Morguard Corp. K. Rai Sahi as long as five years," he said. "Then you have to decide when you want to start building. That alone may take another few years, so it could be as much as 10 years. If everything goes right, you'll definitely see the golf course operating for the next five years or longer." Asked why he would push for the development of such a renowned and world recognized golf course, Sahi noted the development would be a great project that would not only benefit the people it houses in the new high-end community, but the public in general. "Our plan presently indicates the valley will not be developed. It will become a park and or walking trail that will be accessible to everybody," he said. "This will also be very beneficial to the city. It will increase the tax base potentially. Right now, they don't get a whole lot of property taxes from the golf course." He said the decision to develop has nothing to do with the money being made by the golf course, stating the club "does fine." He noted while the golf course continues to function, it would continue to seek to host the Canadian Open. He also said when the development does go through, that is not necessarily the end of the Glen Abbey Golf Club. "We are having conversations to build a new Glen Abbey at some point, somewhere to host the Canadian Open," said Sahi. "I think we have some opportunities. We've had some conversations with certain properties (to see) if they are available. We mentioned that to the mayor and I think it will be his preference as well to have it in Oakville. That will be the first effort we will make. In case we don't get it, we have had conversations with Golf Canada, so we will definitely have other opportunities to do that. So, one way or the other, it will take place. We have lots of time to plan for this." As to what will become of the Glen Abbey Golf Club employees, Sahi noted they would have the opportunity to work at other ClubLink facilities.
