Oliver ran on a campaign calling for greater federal leadership in the area of health care. Improving the economy was another major talking point for Oliver who noted many young people finishing university with big debts are unable to find work. He said two of his own adult children are among those having such difficulty. Oliver has also called for greater democracy by getting rid of omnibus bills and said he wants to see a return to evidence-based decision making in Ottawa. Prior to his retirement Oliver served a 20-year tenure as president and CEO of HHS. During that period he said he worked for more than a decade to bring a new hospital to Oakville, leading to the construction $2.7-billion facility, which will open at Dundas Street and Third Line in December. Oliver is chair of the Partnerships for Health System Improvement Review Panel of the Canadian Institute of Health Research, and served recently as Pension Observer of the Hospitals of Ontario Pension Plan (HOOPP) Board. He is a Fellow of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Ontario and has served as Assistant Deputy Minister for the Ministry of Health and LongTerm Care. He received the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal in 2013 for service to Canada.
