Retired Beaver carrier recognized as an `All Star' by Nathan Howes Special to the Beaver 21 | Thursday, October 15, 2015 | OAKVILLE BEAVER | www.insideHALTON.com James Montague's passion for helping people with disabilities is evidenced in the number of individuals honoured at the annual All Star Awards Gala. Coordinated by Montague, an Oakville resident and event planner, the fifth All Star Awards Gala on Sept. 26 recognized the talents and contributions of those in the community with a developmental challenge. The sold-out event, which drew 210 award winners, guests and dignitaries including Mayor Rob Burton and Ontario Labour Minister and Oakville MPP Kevin Flynn, took place at the Holiday Inn Oakville. Together with his father, Steve, Montague organizes the gala with support from Community Living Oakville, Best Pack and STRIDE (Supported Training & Rehabilitation in Diverse Environments). "My passion is Special Olympics. My passion is people with disabilities. I love giving somebody an award for what they do in their day-to-day life. They don't always get recognized for what they do, so it's great to give them an award," said Montague. The 23-year-old noted there were 86 award winners this year, including five from STRIDE and 42 from Community Living Oakville. Jane Brammar "It's a tremendous event. No one leaves without a happy face. They're always happy when they leave and they're always happy when they receive an award. It's like winning an Oscar for them," said Montague. This year's ceremony, which featured a number of performers including 13-year-old Colin Brennan, who has autism, was a "special one," Montague said, as he celebrated its fifth anniversary by giving boutonnieres to the winners. One of four new dedication awards was given James Montague to former long-time Oakville Beaver carrier Jane Brammar, who retired earlier this year after 20 years of service. She received the For Loyal Service with The Oakville Beaver 1995-2015 Award. The 65-year-old, who is developmentallychallenged, started packaging flyers in the warehouse in 1995. She was given a route later that year, delivering papers in downtown Oakville, just south of Navy Street and Lakeshore Road East. Brammar was reassigned to Blackcombe Crescent, where she resides, in 1998 and finished her service on that route last January. Tanja Loeb, a friend, said Brammar was excited to receive the award because her job was important to her and she was devoted to it. see Brammar on p.23 Thinking about your child's education?
