www.insideHALTON.com | OAKVILLE BEAVER | Thursday, August 27, 2015 | 14 Halton women most savvy about climate change: survey Halton residents, especially women, are becoming more knowledgeable about climate change and they're taking steps to reduce energy use at home and while driving, according to the Region's latest survey. But although residents are more aware about the connection between air quality and their health -- they're not necessarily changing their activities during periods of air quality problems. The 2014 Air Quality Climate Change survey also found Halton women led the way in conserving energy and knowledge about climate change and its affects. Overall, Halton residents' attitudes and behaviour related to air quality and climate change varied by demographics, including age, sex, municipality, income and education. The report, which went to Regional council recently, indicated while 95 per cent of residents agreed the world's climate is changing, only 83 per cent were concerned about it. But Halton women were the most concerned, along with those aged 25-44, according to the survey, which was also taken in 2009. Females and residents aged 25-44 were also more aware climate change caused more smog advisory days, extreme weather events, frequent and severe heat waves, and insects carrying disease in the 2014 survey than compared 2009. Women and those with middle to higher incomes were also more likely to carpool, according to the survey. Of the 76 per cent of residents, who recognized their activities affected climate change, 92 per cent knew vehicle exhaust contributed to the change and 70 per cent identified energy use at home as a factor. Residents in middle-to-high income brackets, along with postsecondary graduates, were also more likely to recognize that home energy use contributed to climate change. The 2014 survey also indicated that 40 per cent of households reported taking steps to reduce their use of phantom power. Some 32 per cent said they unplugged devices not in use; 11 per cent of households specifically unplugged charged cell phones; nine per cent of households turned off power bars and five see More on p.18 High Efficiency FURNACE & CENTRAL AIR ONLY AIRE ONE MADNESS SALE! $ $ PACKAGE INCLUDES: · 95.5% High Efficiency Gas Furnace · High Efficiency Central Air R410A Refrigerant · 10 Year Factory Warranty · Limited Time Offer 3990 59 * OR $ * /MTH OAC Great Family DininG For over 40 years! When Mike and Diane Chapelle founded the company in Oakville 25 years ago, they did so with the philosophy that they would treat their customers to personal service that was more like family. More than two decades later, the company's growth proves it's a philosophy that worked. The Chapelles started out, just the two of them, as an office coffee service with Diane handling sales and Mike doing the deliveries and equipment set up. Sons Mike Jr. and Bobby often stepped in to help and it wasn't long before Jason Barlow was hired as the first customer service representative. Since those early days with the company, Barlow has gone on to own one of the first Personal Service Coffee franchises in Brampton where he not only oversees the retail operation but continues to service many of the office clients he served some 20 years ago. Service manager Enri Santos started with the company shortly after Barlow and today continues to lead the Service Department of Personal Service Coffee. Mike Jr. and Bobby also still work for the company and are heavily involved in day-to-day operations, as well as propelling the future of the business. When operations manager Warren Manoff joined Personal Service Coffee almost four years ago he did so at a time of growth with a focus on family and continued personal service. It is this growth that propelled the Oakville Chamber of Commerce to nominate the company in the medium-sized business category at the 2013 annual Oakville Awards for Business Excellence, a move up from being nominated in the small business category just the year prior. Upon hearing the company's name announced as winners, the entire team was shocked, and thrilled, as they were up against a number of well known mediumsized Oakville businesses. What sets Personal Coffee Service apart, according to Manoff, is that personal service they provide. From deliveries to office customers, to complimentary beverages served to every customer at every showroom location. "It's what we do," he says simply. That's not all the company is doing. A private label K-Cup branded `The Road Ahead' has recently been launched and is now available in showrooms and to office customers. It's a slightly darker medium roast that Mike had a role in hand selecting. Showrooms are also featuring a number of compostable K-Cups and pods in an effort to offer more environmentally friendly options to customers. K-Cups, or single serve coffee brewers, had become popular but finding product wasn't easy. Personal Service Coffee began offering these machines and coffee to the offices they serviced and before long the general public was knocking at the office door asking to buy. The solution, Manoff says, was to turn the boardroom into a showroom a decision that forever changed the trajectory of the business. Personal Service Coffee still delivers to offices, servicing countless Ontario businesses, but the K-Cup industry was a game changer, providing Personal Service Coffee with the opportunity to open not only the first boutique showroom, but quickly followed by three more locations in Hamilton, Brampton and Belleville, respectively. And, despite the market becoming more competitive with product now available at grocery and mass retailers, Manoff says "over the last four years we've grown from four locations to opening our 22nd showroom last month in Lindsay." The company proudly employs 23 full-time workers in Oakville and more than 100 extended staff across the province, an exceptional level of
