OSC brings back house league tourneys House league tournaments are back at the Oakville Soccer Club. Last weekend and this week, the club is hosting its inaugural Inaria Cup competition, which will replace the Oakville Cup as the playoff to determine the club's house league champions for age divisions ranging from under-13/14 to U17/U18. The girls' tournament took place last weekend, with Kelly Green Oakville United Taxi, Gold Mr. Blue and Navy Blue Cogeco claiming the U13/14, U15/16 and U17/18 titles, respectively. The boys' competition will start tonight (Thursday) and conclude Sunday. In total, the Inaria Cup will involve 122 teams, more than 1,200 OSC players and more than 100 referees. OSC has not run house league tournaments in more than a decade, but Chris Grierson, technical director of the club's boys' programs, said change to the house league playoff structure was needed. "We had the Oakville Cup... but that really wasn't a tournament. You'd play a game and then either move on or be knocked out," Grierson said. "What we found from a club standpoint is that if a house league team was struggling during the season... when they got to Oakville Cup deadline, they might not have as many players to play. Or, if their season was going well and then they played in the Oakville Cup and were beaten, they'd kind of give up on their season." The Inaria Cup, named after tournament sponsor Inaria (a Toronto-based sports clothing company), guarantees all teams several round-robin games on the first two days of competition. The top four teams in the preliminary round then square off for semifinals and finals in each division. "They'll definitely get their bang for their buck and get an opportunity to play more games," Grierson said. "There's nothing worse than playing one game and losing and knowing you're out." This past Saturday, all the girls' U13/14, U15/16 and U17/18 teams played two games each at the club's Pine Glen facility. The same will be true for boys' teams this Saturday. "If your friends are on a different team, you can watch them," Grierson said. "They will be crazy busy days at Pine Glen, but we're looking forward to it."
