The Toronto Star Women's Amateur has been held at various courses around the GTA since its inception in 1999, attacting many up-and-coming amateurs who hope to pursue professional golf careers. Christina Foster, a 19-year-old who fired a 71 during Monday's opening round, is making the tournament her last stop before she turns pro and competes for cash at next month's U.S. Women's Open. All are welcome to visit the club (located at 160 Water St., Oakville) Sunday, July 5 from 2-5 p.m. to celebrate the Games and wish the best to Burloak's Adam van Koeverden, Brady Reardon and Mark Oldershaw. The local paddling trio was selected to the Canadian Pan Am team based on results at national team trials as well as three World Cup events, all of which took place last month. Pan Am kayaking and canoeing competition will take place in St. Catharines, beginning July 11. The Burloak Canoe Club celebration is supported by the Toronto 2015 Pan Am/Parapan Am Games through the IGNITE program, which enables individuals, organizations and communities to create their own special Games-theme initiative and/or increase awareness of existing projects through an association with the Games. Burloak Canoe Club is one of Canada's leading flat-water Olympic canoe-kayak racing clubs. Burloak has won six national championships and six Canadian masters championships since its founding in 1989. Blue Devils rebound from rare soccer loss Tyler Wasson, Khody Ellis and Filip Vilella scored second-half goals as the Oakville Blue Devils bounced back from League1 Cup elimination to blank the Master's FA Saints 3-0 in League1 soccer play Sunday at Sheridan College. Oakville's victory came four days after the team dropped a 2-0 Sports Briefs decision to ANB Futbol at River Oaks Park, a loss that prevented the Blue Devils from advancing to the quarter-final of the League1 Cup playdowns. "Getting the win was vital (Sunday) and the team responded with great energy and a desire to get back to winning ways," Blue Devils coach Duncan Wilde said. With the Vaughan Azzurri and Woodbridge Strikers playing to a 0-0 draw Sunday evening, Oakville (seven wins, one draw in eight games) now owns a four-point lead atop the League1 regular-season standings. The Blue Devils will have a chance to avenge their League1 Cup loss when they visit ANB Futbol in league play this Saturday. Longhorns drop another close game Despite scoring one more touchdown than their opposition, the Oakville Longhorns dropped to 0-4 in Northern Football Conference play with a 28-24 loss to the Sudbury Spartans Saturday in Sudbury. Archelaus Jack scored two majors for the Longhorns -- one coming on a 70-yard punt return -- and Gavin Malcolm and Henry Clarke added touchdown runs. Clarke's two-yard plunge gave Oakville a 24-19 lead five minutes into the fourth quarter, but Sudbury scored a touchdown midway through the frame to retake the lead, then added a safety touch in the final minute. Oakville attempted a two-point conversion following each of its touchdowns, and was unsuccessful each time. The Spartans kicked two field goals and two converts in addition to their three majors and the safety. Longhorns quarterback David Ferkul was limited to 85 passing yards on eight completions. Six of those catches were made by Jack, who finished with 71 receiving yards. Daran Harry and Greg Sullivan each made six tackles for the Longhorns, who will visit the Hamilton Steel City Patriots this Saturday for a 6 p.m. kickoff at Mohawk Sports Park. The Patriots edged Oakville 46-42 earlier this month at Bronte Athletic Field. Bantam Titans 5-0 in OFC football play The Oakville Titans bantams remained undefeated in Ontario Football Conference action with a 35-6 win over the Vaughan Rebels last weekend. Callum Beer, Stephen Wenzl, Raphael Sargsyan and Sammy Ghardi scored touchdowns for the Titans, and Wenzl caught a pass from Jordan Bish for a two-point conversion. Tommy Gorgenyi booted a convert for Oakville, which will look to go to 6-0 when it hosts the Twin Cities Predators this Sunday at Bronte Athletic Field (1 p.m. start). Also victorious last weekend were the Titans' varsity (27-22 over the Nipissing Wild) and junior varsity (34-23 over Vaughan) squads. The peewees dropped a 47-6 decision to Chatham. Local hockey trio competing in Brick Invitational A trio of Oakville 10-year-olds will play on the same team at the prestigious Brick Invitational Hockey Tournament later this month in Edmonton. Bronson Ride, Calum Ritchie and Nicholas Lardis will suit up for Toronto Pro Hockey, which will play its first game of the tournament June 29 at West Edmonton Mall. Toronto Pro Hockey has won four of five tournaments leading up to the Brick Invitational. Ride, Ritchie and Lardis are also rep minor hockey teammates with the Oakville atom AAA Rangers.
