White Oaks debate teams continue to dominate by Nathan Howes Special to the Beaver 25 | Thursday, June 18, 2015 | OAKVILLE BEAVER | www.insideHALTON.com Oakville's White Oaks Secondary School (WOSS) students continue to debate their way to the top. At the Senior National Debate Championships in Toronto in late April, the pairing of Dasha Metropolitansky and Taha Ahmed -- who placed in the top eight and lost in the quarter-final -- received the John Baty Shield award as the tournament's best province (Ontario). In the individual standings, Metropolitansky was the top Ontario debater, placing second overall; Ahmed came third. Heidi Mittal and Anubhav Mathur finished second in the bilingual portion of the debate contest. White Oaks had four teams competing, more than any other school in Canada. WOSS teacher and debate coach Hamish Guthrie attributes the students' success to the hard work they put in at practice every week. "The teams that are graduating are some of the best ones we've ever had. "The year before was marvelous and the year before that...but it's a matter of each generation wanting to live up to the good reputation that the earlier generation has given them," said Guthrie. While it's fun to be victorious, the WOSS debate coach said the activity should be about more than just winning -- "it's the development of a student's mind and awakening them to more stimulating things in the world around them; politics, education, art, philosophy, history. "The competitiveness managed judicially can be a real stimulation. It's not just about winning and being better than the others. "There is some really friendly, good-spirited competition between us and a number of the other schools that we particularly admire," said Guthrie. see Debate on p.26 10%off All you can EAt Buffet (Lunch or Dinner Tues - Fri) staurant Sweets & Re at E n a C u o Y l l A rian 100% Vegeta fEt f u B a Weekday s o Sam SpeCiaL LUNCH $1099 3 Wash, Cut and Style 3 FREE gifts Cannot be combined with any FATHER'S DAY DEAL Hair Studio 1 $ Expires December 31, 2015 other offer.
