Unfortunately, some people aren't listening." · Stephanie Dooley, Couple would exchange medal for daughter's life in a heartbeat By Howard Mozel 0.\K V 1 L L E B E A V E R S T A F F Sill and Stephanie Dooley are jastifiably proud of their Queen's Golden Jubilee Medal, but in their hearts wish they had never earned the honour. "We'd rather not have it," said Bill who, with his wife were honoured for their tireless efforts on behalf of MADD (Mothers Against Drunk Driving) HaltonPeel. "Foremost in our minds is why we do this." "This" includes countless speaking engagem ents in Stephanie's role as chapter pres ident. cutting and distributing thousands of red ribbons, work ing toward im proving drunk driving laws and generally ham mering away at the anti-drunk driving message. The reason why they labour so hard is more painful: the death of their daughter Janet by a drunk driver in November 1991. President MADD Halton-Peel `T h e award is nice, but it won't bring my daughter back," said Bill. Stephanie says this time of year is especially hard, but the couple never forgets - as Janet's 1990 card to her parents that rests in the branches of their dec orated Christmas tree attests. "It will never be the same, but we can't bring back what was," she said. In short, both wish MADD was not needed. "I'd like to think it's unneces sary for a group like MADD to be here," said Stephanie. "Unfortunately, some people aren't listening." Those handling the Queen's Golden Jubilee certainly took notice. Given to those who have made a "significant contribution to Canada, to their community or to their fellow Canadians," the honour includes a gold medal suspended from a red, blue and white ribbon plus a certificate signed by G overnor General Adrienne Clarkson. The Dooleys learned that they and 25 other MADD volun teers were receiving the award during MADD Canada's nation al conference in September. Recently, during a victims' din ner at an area restaurant, MADD Canada chapter administrator and Oakville resident Wanda Kristensen handed them out. (Her own son David was killed by a drunk driver in 1996.) "She thought it would be nice (See `MADD' page A3) Focus ......................... R1 Update........................
