Nominations for candidates closed Friday, May 29 at 2 p.m. Town council declared the Ward 6 Town council seat vacant following the sudden death of Max Khan at Oakville Trafalgar Memorial Hospital March 29. There has been no shortage of interest in the job with Oakville chiropractor Natalia Lishchyna (votenatalia.ca) declaring her candidacy early on. Lishchyna was challenging Eve Adams for the Conservative nomination in the new Oakville North-Burlington federal riding. Khan's brother and chiropractor Mansoor Khan threw his hat into the ring not long after. Local consultant and economist Linda Nazareth (lindanazareth.com) also joined the race. She ran against Ward 5 Town Councillor Marc Grant in the recent municipal election. Iroquois Ridge Residents' Association President and IT specialist John Paulic joined the contenders May 1. The 10-year Ward 6 resident, ran against Gary Carr for the position of Halton Region chair last fall. Gurinder Singh (www.voteforgurinder.ca) joined the race on May 15. Semi-retired, Singh challenged Khan during the recent municipal election. Oakville electrical engineer Asjad Hussain is also seeking the Ward 6 councillor seat. He said he is president of Amal Foundation Canada, which carries out community building through social work and various events throughout the year. Some of the more recent entries included former Ward 6 Councillor Jim Smith, who held the Ward 6 councillor's position from 1988-94. He has lived in the ward for 37 years and Oakville for 47 years and said he is eager to once again give back to the community. Gordon Brennan ran against Rob Burton for mayor in 2014. Shanaka Weerasinghe ran against Khan in the recent municipal election. His platform includes promises to support small businesses and encourage residents to shop locally. Carleen Antonsen has also recently signed up as a candidate.
