continued from p.20 who worked together in the department," said Boettinger. He has also been affected personally by the disease -- his wife, Cheryl, battled two bouts of breast cancer in a 13-year timespan. She's currently cancer-free following surgery in 2013. During an introduction speech he gave at last year's opening Relay ceremony, Boettinger said Cheryl's journey took courage, strength and determination. "(It's) courage to choose surgeries, treatments and tests, strength to endure many medical procedures, including a marathon 14-hour FCT believes in supporting its employees and community surgery followed by seven months of recovery. Cheryl is a story about fighting back... about hope," said Boettinger. The IT operations manager has also been volunteering on the Oakville Relay committee for several years, working with CCS Halton to organize the event. "FCT not only puts a team in, but we also help with setup. The employees come in at 9 (a.m.) on Relay day and they help set up the tents and get the venue ready. Last year, we had about 30 people help do the setup," said Boettinger. Wendy Rinella, FCT vice-president of corporate affairs, said the company has "a passion to serve, (which) extends to the community." Its integration within the areas of where its employees live and work is important to FCT, according to Rinella. "Looking at Twane's greatness at being a volunteer and raising money, it's something we want to support. We're very supportive of initiatives like this, where FCT and its employees can bring very positive contributions to a cause in a local community," she said. FCT "lives that value" because its CEO, Michael LeBlanc, and CIO, Gary Gallacher, are both on the team every year, Boettinger added. He issued an informal challenge to residents and businesses to get involved and raise money for Relay for Life. "If they call the Canadian Cancer Society or me, I will be happy to direct them towards the Relay office." Registration for the Oakville Relay costs $25 with a minimum fundraising goal of $150 per participant. Those interested in signing up can do so online at http://goo.gl/7UH0gp or www. relayforlife.ca.
