The Oakville Beaver, Wednesday December 18, 2002 - D1 Olympians lace up Friday night at Ice Sports Oakville is another great opportunity to catch sev eral of Canada's hockey Olympic gold medalists. And, best of all, they're not just there for a meet and greet. They're there to play. On ice. Yes, the Mississauga Ice Bears are back again to host a National W omen's Hockey League game in Oakville, which has virtually become their home away from home over the past few seasons. And not surprising. They're owned by Oakville businessman and hockey fan Bill Metcalfe and the coaching staff is headed up by Oakville's Keith Murray. And you actually couldn't have asked for a better game. In town, are arguably the best wom en's club team in the country, the Beatrice Aeros, who just recently lost their first game of the season (to the Brampton Thunder), to drop their sparkling record to 19-1-1 for 39 points. The Mississauga Ice Bears are also having a good season, and despite seven rookies in the line-up, are well above the .500 mark at 10-6-1 (along with an over time loss) for 22 points. So they should be loaded for Bear, to excuse the pun. The two teams boast no less than five veterans from the Canadian team that won Olympic Gold this past February. For the Ice Bears, of course, is Therese Brisson. And for the Beatrice Aeros is Sami-Jo Small, Cheryl Pounder, Becky Kellar and Geraldine Heaney. Oh, and don't worry. After the game, they're usually quite willing to meet and greet and sign autographs. This year's event, at Oakville's Richview G olf Club on Boxing Day (which is Thursday, December 26) will once again benefit charities throughout the region.
