Linda Nazareth joins race for Ward 6 council seat by David Lea Oakville Beaver Staff 5 | Thursday, May 14, 2015 | OAKVILLE BEAVER | www.insideHALTON.com Local consultant and economist Linda Nazareth has joined the race to fill the Ward 6 councillor seat recently vacated by the death of Max Khan. Town council declared the seat vacant last week following Khan's sudden death at Oakville Trafalgar Memorial Hospital on March 29. Council voted to fill the position through a by-election to take place Monday, July 13. In declaring her candidacy last week, Nazareth also outlined her intentions to ensure careful spending and guard against tax hikes if elected to council. "I have lived in Oakville for decades and am passionate about the Town's future," said Nazareth in a press release. "I look forward to bringing my skills to work for Oakville and for Ward 6." Nazareth worked as an on-air economist for CTV's Business News Network from 19992012. Her work experience also includes time spent as a senior economist with CIBC, an economist with the federal government, a professional speaker and author. Nazareth runs her own consulting firm, is the Senior Fellow for Economics and Population Change at the think tank MacDonald Laurier Institute and a recipient of the Queen's Diamond Jubilee Award for public service. Nazareth, who is married and has a 12-year-old daughter, said she has been an Oakville resident on and off since 1977. "Oakville is my community, and it has been my community for a very long time," she said. Linda Nazareth "I might have done some lofty things in my career, but my first job was here as a page in the downtown library. I went to high school in Oakville (Queen Elizabeth Park School) and got married at an Oakville church. My daughter was born in the Oakville hospital and Oakville is where my husband and I have chosen to raise her." Nazareth, who ran against Ward 5 Town Councillor Marc Grant during the recent municipal election, has taken a close look at the Town's finances and said she is concerned the average tax burden on Oakville households has grown sharply over the last four years. She said that is matched by a growth in expenditures that is well over the rate of inflation. The Ward 5 resident, who emphasized that she lives close to the Ward 6 border, said she is also running because of her desire to be a strong advocate for all Ward 6 residents. "I am a communicator and I'm not afraid to raise my voice on behalf of others when necessary," she said. "I look forward to being part of the discussions on the future of our great town." So far, Nazareth faces two other challengers who have tossed their hats in for the Ward 6 seat. Oakville chiropractor Natalia Lishchyna, best known for challenging Eve Adams for the Conservative nomination in the new Oakville North-Burlington riding, and Khan's brother, Mansoor Khan, have also joined the race.
