www.insideHALTON.com | OAKVILLE BEAVER | Thursday, April 9, 2015 | 40 OAK's Bouchard brings calmness and confidence to younger teammates continued from p.39 She expressed dissatisfaction with her 2:09.05 clocking in the 200m backstroke, even though it won her a second gold at national trials and helped her earn the swimmer-of-the-meet award. "Hopefully, (my breakthrough) will come next year at Olympic trials, but I'm definitely using it as fuel going into these two competitions this summer and hopefully I can keep on a roll and Dominique Bouchard get some medals," she said, a gold medal draped around her neck. Bouchard said her parents are looking at getting tickets to see her swim, and she's looking forward to gaining more international experience as a member of the Canadian team. "Any time you compete in front of a home crowd it pumps the athletes and you get really excited about it," she said. Baker said Bouchard can be overly critical of her own performances, but also sets high expectations that she continues to meet. "What's also been impressive about her (as someone) in her 20s is how she's settled in with our group of teenage girls and will sit with them and give high fives," Baker added. "She brings a certain calmness and a certain belief that you can be an average Joe who works hard and is consistent, and be a winner." Other OAK highlights OAK's Tessa Cieplucha also won a national championship at Team Canada Trials, claiming the women's 1,500m freestyle in a time of 1:47.84 -- nearly seven seconds faster than her time in qualifying. The event was not a qualifier for the Pan Ams, but the 15-year-old's performance did earn her a spot in this year's junior world championships in Singapore. Cieplucha also placed fourth in the 400m individual medley, when her time of 4:46.54 was the 18th-fastest in the history of the event in Canada, according to Baker. "She really established herself as an up-and-coming swimmer." Gamal Assaad earned a silver in the men's 50m butterfly -- another event that won't be contested at the Pan Am Games -- and narrowly missed qualifying for the Pan Ams with a third-place effort in the 100m butterfly. OAK had three finalists in the latter event, with Darragh placing fifth and White, seventh. "We had some swimmers with potential for relays. They had to be in the top four, and they were fifth or sixth. They were darn close," added Baker. "I think we did everything we could to swim well... We had 10 club records, and our (athletes) swam about 60 per cent lifetime bests, which is about triple the national average... We were the only team that had three female gold medallists. "I'm quite proud of the team." 4-Month Student Special $189 + HST 11 Lakeshore Road West, Oakville, ON www.thegymnautilus.com 905-844-1610 47th Birthday Sale & Draw YOU'LL SAVE UP TO & MORE!
