By any sane assessment, the world has gone cuckoo-bananas. You can't read a newspaper or turn on a radio, or television, or surf the Internet without being inundated (dare I say, assaulted) by doom and gloom. Popularity surprises author Surprised? Not half as much as the author, who admits: "I thought my mom was going to have to buy a lot of copies. When sales started to take off, it was a real shock." Nowadays, Basford receives fan mail. She regularly trends on social media as devotees post their crayon creations. But wait, the Times reveals there's more: "Hardcore fans often buy several copies of her book at a time, to experiment with different colour combinations." Oh, and "others have turned it into a social activity," replete with crayoners congregating in cafés for `colouring circles'. Apparently, it's all about returning to a simpler, gentler time of life. And you know me, I'm all about gentler and simpler times. Still, you won't nd me buying one of Basford's books and colouring until my heart's content -- or, at least until my heart quits skipping anxious beats over things like global warming. Why? Having been humiliated so many moons ago by a particularly harsh teacher who scolded me for never colouring in the lines, I lack all con dence in crayoning. No, colouring's not for me. That said, I'm inspired by Basford's work and by her followers.
