continued from p.6 poor. Why? Because those people are less likely to vote, it's statistically proven," said Khan. "Maybe if a politician went out there and got their views, it would show that they count and they would come out and vote. "I always get this when I go canvassing... `Thanks for coming by, no one ever knocked on my door' and I'm just blown away because if you are not accessible during a campaign, how accessible are you going to be once you've won? When you don't care to meet people in the middle of a campaign for your self-interest, how accessible will you be once people need you?" Councillor demonstrated an ardent passion for his community This is why my decision to share this interview is important -- it reflects upon why the loss of Max Khan is so tragic to Oakville. In a matter of minutes, Khan taught me how seldom leaders like him exist. The former cancer survivor was not just avid about his background in law and politics, he lived and breathed it. Power is one thing, but passion is another and Max Khan won me over with his ardent passion for people. His idea of campaigning seemed born of a hunger to remember the relevance of the people he stood for and understanding them. It's so rare that we meet people who are zealous about their craft in the way Khan was, despite his struggles with health. Khan took the time to remind me that campaigning doesn't need to be rooted in cheap shots or comparative dialogue. If Khan's personality was not aglow with a candid will to share his hopes for the future, I would not have felt an urge to tell this story. Luck graced me in being able to have a chance to experience such a conversation with a fine figure before he was gone. In the quiet moments of Sunday morning when I received the news of his passing, all I could think about was how appreciative I'd felt as I drove away after our interview days before. Oakville-North Burlington should shed its colours for just a moment and remember that Khan's work extended far beyond being a Liberal, Conservative or NDP supporter. It was about humanity. "When you have a problem, Harper or Trudeau won't come knocking on your door, it'll be your local MP ," said Khan. "And I'll be that guy.... This means I'll actually work for my community... because my work for my community surpasses parties and politics. You don't have to put your faith in the party , you can put your faith in me." -- Submitted by Lauren Maharaj, 25, sports journalism student at Centennial College and 15year resident of Oakville. 11 | Thursday, April 2, 2015 | OAKVILLE BEAVER | www.insideHALTON.com ART'S FISH & CHIPS Come early and avoid the 5 pm rush.
