CCS needs Daffodil Days volunteers Daffodil Month, held every April, is a national fundraising campaign of the Canadian Cancer Society (CCS) -- and the Halton Unit needs volunteers. By volunteering a few hours of time selling daffodil pins at local grocery and retail businesses in support of the Daffodil Month campaign, people will be helping save lives and helping those who are living with cancer. The CCS is funding researchers who work tirelessly towards the next breakthrough in cancer prevention, diagnosis, and treatment to save more lives. For those battling cancer in the community right now, the CCS provides programs, such as peer support, transportation and information. Money raised assists patients and their families living with more than 200 types of cancer. This year, volunteers will be out in the community over two weekends and are looking for enthusiastic volunteers for the following dates: April 9-12 and April 16-19. Shifts are two hours and anyone interested can sign up for one or more shifts selling daffodil pins for a donation in Oakville, Burlington and Milton. Students who help out can obtain their community service hours. Adult volunteers are also sought as site coordinators at various locations for two to four days. Those interested in volunteering can contact the Halton community office at 905-845-5231 or go to www. halton.myccsschedule.ca and sign up online to sell daffodil pins. March 31 workshop can help smokers quit Halton Region and its partners at the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health (CAMH) are encouraging smokers in Halton to kick the habit by participating in the STOP (Smoking Treatment for Ontario Patients) program. The STOP Program workshop offers eligible participants in Halton five weeks of cost-free nicotine replacement therapy and smoking cessation information to help them in their quit attempt. The next STOP workshop will be held on March 31 from 6-9 p.m. in Georgetown. "The single best thing you can do for your health is to quit smoking," said Regional Chair Gary Carr. "If you want to quit, programs like STOP provide the invaluable supports that can help increase any smoker's chances of becoming tobacco-free." For more information, to see if you are eligible to participate, and to register for the workshop, call Halton Region by dialing 311 by March 31. 21 | Thursday, March 26, 2015 | OAKVILLE BEAVER | www.insideHALTON.com WE CARRY A LARGE SELECTION OF VITAMINS, SUPPLEMENTS & HERBS 511 Maple Grove Drive, Unit #11 Oakville ( South of the QEW, East of Trafalgar ) THE INTR UCING INTRODUCIN LEAF TEA n 80 varieties varie in v ieties ti FINEST LOOSE Thinking about a Softener or Reverse Osmosis system? McMaster University/McMaster Children's Hospital is conducting a research study to investigate whether the drug Riluzole may be helpful with these symptoms. Riluzole is a drug that is already Health Canada and FDA approved for treating adults with a neurological disorder. Why is Riluzole being studied as a treatment for ASD? The human brain is never quiet: every region constantly fires electrical signals. Some signals are loud and clear and others are muffled murmurs. In autism, the background murmurs are hard to tune out and the brain becomes noisy, making it difficult to receive clear signals. It is like trying to have a private conversation in a crowded room - some words get lost and the message is hard to understand. Who can participate? Children aged 6-17 diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD, Autism, PDD-NOS or Asperger's Syndrome) may be eligible. You do not have to reside within the hospital's catchment area in order to participate. How do I know if this trial would be a good fit for my child? Decisions about medication always require careful consideration. Dr. Bennett will meet with you at the beginning to provide information and discuss whether this study is right for you and your child. How do I learn more? To learn more, or to participate, please contact: Dr. Teresa Bennett's Research office at 905-521-2100 Ext. 74906 Oakville Minor Football Flag and Tackle Flag ages 5-14 Tackle ages 10-19 Coaches & Volunteers Needed!
