A news release issued by Halton police said Fletcher was leaving to take on new challenges and opportunities and would also serve as a deputy chief in Simcoe. Fletcher began his policing career with Halton police as a cadet in 1984. The Burlington resident's policing experience included time spent in uniform patrol, criminal investigations, drugs and intelligence, major crimes and the Tactical Rescue Unit. He currently serves as an executive of the Ontario Association of Chiefs of Police (OACP), where he champions the idea of community mobilization. Fletcher is also chair of the OACP Community Safety and Crime Prevention Committee. He is a graduate of the FBI National Academy and, in 2012, was recognized with a Governor General of Canada Order of Merit of the Police Forces. In 2014, Fletcher received a Queen's Diamond Jubilee medal. Someone will then come on the line advising that he's helping get the young person out of custody, that the young person doesn't want his/her parents to know anything about it and that the grandparent shouldn't talk to anyone else. It goes further. The scammer will then want the grandparent to buy some gift cards from a store like Home Hardware, paying for them in cash and then calling in the numbers, following which the cards should be cut up. If it works, not only does it make the crime undetectable, it will lead to another call needing more money. Loving grandparents think of helping first. A word of warning may prevent victimization.
